Subject: Ironman in Texas?

Has anyone heard of any future plans to put an Ironman or Irondistance race anywhere in Texas?  I would love to have a IM race closer than Arizona, Louisville or Florida.  I know about Redman.  I just like the Ironman races.  I know the distance is the same but I like all the hoopla and I am willing to pay for it every now and then.

Officially branded MDot Ironman?

It's not just no, it's HELL no.  They spent 10 years trying and it's not going to happen.

Just curious, but who, when , how, why did it not work.  I would think they could find somewhere around here to do one.

The Easy Man IM distance race series will be in Texas around 2011. Just working out a few details.

I hope you're right, Keith.  An Mdot in Texas would be awesome.  In the meantime, we'll be happy to enjoy a couple of 1/2s in Austin and Galveston as our long course menu.

Because of what Keith does, I translate that statement into this: "I know of efforts that others are making to get an IM in Texas and they're making progress."

I was hoping that he had at least some "inside info" that would lead him to say that.  I like your translation, Dennis.

Suppose at the Longhorn you did 2 laps of the swim... 2 loops of the bike course... and a couple changes to the run course to make it a 3 loop/26.2 mile run. I'm just sayin'...

PS: So I don't give the wrong impression; I have no knowledge of anything like that being planned, more just wishful thinking

That's what I was thinking.  I would think austin would be perfect.  Don't get me wrong I can only imagine the logisitical nightmares of planning a sprint let alone and IM but it would be awesome.

I'm guessing that the "Easy Man" reference was a joke, taking a shot at the threads that pop up from time to time asking "Which IM is easiest?"

the swim is all with the current, the bike is all downhill, and they have people movers for the run, so even if you stop you are still moving forward. You are assigned 4 volunteers to ensure you never wait in a line, and they do the entire course with you to make sure things are going well for you plus you can come over the finish line repeatedly until you get the finishers photo you really love.  Very Limited field though, by personal invitation only.

Well, it's not an M-Dot branded race... but there is the Redman in OK, 140.6 miles! That's pretty close.

If there was ever an MDot IM in Texas, (John, are you listening?) I would sign up day one. There, I said it.

Yeah, Dallas or Austin would be tough to pass up (after some serious begging and deal making).  Otherside of this massive state and I would have to think about it.

They should set it up for Houston in early August for maximum carnage. I'd put the over/under on DNF at 40%.

Austin is pretty unlikely. It's great for training and we have our share of world class triathletes, but it's just not that great for longer races. As Keith mentioned, it's a matter of finding a venue that supports all 3 disciplines. It's hard enough fitting in the 1/2 out at Decker Lake. From an athlete/village/spectator/accessibility perspective, Walter E. Long Park just doesn't quite cut it for an IM.

The only even remote possibility I could see within Austin itself would be to have it downtown with the bike course heading out east to cover similar ground to Longhorn. That's what IMAZ does. Like IMAZ, you could even potentially have the run course follow the hike and bike trail around Town Lake. Even that would be tough, though, to have the road closures to get the bike out of town and even harder to shut town the Town Lake trail all day on Sunday. I can't see getting road closures for both the bike and the run if you did the run over surface streets. A more likely prospect would be something out at Lake Georgetown or something similar.
