Subject: Grand Theft Auto
I just want to know how out of the mainstream I am. All of this stink over Grand Theft Auto's "pornographic" content amazed me when I saw it on the news last night. The game is about stealing and killing!!! Apparently that is fine, but when some sex is added in all of a sudden the game is a moral threat and should be pulled off the shelves? This seems so hypocritical to me, always has since I was a kid. Let me say that 1) if I were a parent I would not buy this game for my kid, porn or no, though I would be well aware that -probably he- would be playing it elsewhere. 2) I am not for banning anything like this. 3) I have no problem with any adult playing this game and have watched my neighbor play it-though I didn't see any of the "porn"scenes.

I guess my point is that I feel that it is a bit silly to be fine with a game where a character kills and steals things left and right, but then get all upset when it shows sex. No?

What is it with our culture that sex in the media is so bad and violence is acceptable? Bit of a rant here, but I don't think I could be the only one who feels like this. I just have never understood it and it seems we have our priorities all out of line as a culture. I am sure that the sex in this game is not loving sex but still, it seems hypocritical to me.

Any parents out there weigh in on this? It confuses me quite honestly....

I share your confusion. Movies and TV shows are packed with violence and nobody says a word. Janet Jackson's breast is visible for 2 seconds and there is a national outcry.

I have to preface this by saying I don't own a single video game.  I haven't played one in over a year, however when I used to have roomates one of them had a PS2 and one of my favorite games to play was Grand Theft Auto 3.  It was a blast, and even though it was super violent I think most people can distinguish the difference between playing it on your TV and real life.

Someone emailed me a link to a clip of this so called "pornographic" scene, it's nothing you don't see on late night cable.  In fact, it's even more mild because the details are crumby.  They don't show any anatomy.  The guy is still wearing his shirt and jeans and there is nothing graphic in any way, shape or form.  If you want to see the link PM me and I'll pass it along.

This stuff is getting way blown out of proportion.  It's a video game.  if you don't like it, don't let your kids play it.  If some kid goes on a shooting spree and says it's because of a video game/movie/something on TV, he has much deeper issues starting with the way his parents raised him.

EDIT:  Oh yeah, and very valid point above.  The game is about going around killing and stealing and causing mayhem, but as soon as there's a little sex everyone freaks out!!!!  I don't get it at all.

Good, glad people agree, let's all band together and tell these clowns to lay off this crap and do something about jobs and the fact that I can't eat the fish I catch then.

I play this game whenever I have the opportunity (I don't have any video games, so that's at friends houses). Last time I played was about 2 years ago. The first one with hookers you could pick up. I enjoy running over pedestrians. What can I say? BTW, I always sleep with the hookers, but never kill them. That's just skeezy, even if it does get you more points (and have you ever seen "Monster", not so smart trying to kill hookers).

I totally agree with everyone. This game isn't designed for kids and I don't think the makers ever pretended it was appropriate for them. But as a 24 year old woman, if I wanna play a game in which I run over pedestrians, drive too fast, shoot at cops, and sleep with hookers, I don't really see the problem. If I'm not warped by now, I'm not gonna be.

I also find it hilarious that our society is so cool with violence, but so abhorred by sex.... weird.

We all start out thinking normally, logging massive hours of training a week, then we start discussing animated porn. I think the heat is getting to us.

Yeah well. Sometimes little things piss me off. Hillary Clinton should be doing other things besides investigating video games especially when there are quite a few top news stories that she should be working on and asking questions about. Supposedly she is something of a "liberal". Liberals aren't supposed to be for censorship last time I checked. Of course they are all just opportunists with this "morality" garbage. Did I mention that politicians irritate the hell out of me?

I agree that politicians are wasting their time on worrying about a small amount of pornographic content in a video game, when at any time I want, on my computer, I can see midgets having sex with horses. At around 13 or 14, when most kids have the internet and hormones, they have an unlimited amount of boobies to look at. Spend money on big problems, not small ones.

Good point Mark,I agree, but the question is, how often do you "want"?

Wife throw any dishwashers at you lately?

I get it. Sorry to be suspicious, but I have been to some other forums where posters are snarky so I am traumatized. I am almost never as upset as I might come across (this doesn't keep me up nights). Just my way of venting about things I don't get.

I should stay out of political discussions too. I'm working on that. I felt it was all right to attack Hillary since she is supposedly on "my"side. Check my logs today for the quote that I am going to try to live up to, especially on line.

Now off to do an OWS because the damn pool is closed. I am a bit worried baout the blue-green algae, but the parks dept claims it is safe.

I might be off base here but my understanding of the issue is not with the game per se it is with the texture plugins that allow you to mod the game to create custom pornographic content with the resident 3D engine and then distribute that content to other gamers along the same lines as maps are shared among StarCraft and WarCraft devotees.

Personally I don't play GTA it's not my speed and I won't allow it into my home but that has nothing to do with a little frontal nudity heck you get that on Space Channel and CBC in prime time.

That's interesting Wookiee. So it has to do with the customizable factor rather than the accessing secret scenes factor? So it is more of a copyright issue?

Here is the article I read today. That's what I was going on. It seemed to me like there were secret scenes that could be unlocked from the language in the article.

I am 30 yrs old, I admit things were different, but not so much. At any early age I watched all the most gruesome movies, played war and played viloent video games. Not as graphic as the present day though. I also listened to Metallica, Slayer and even some Ozzy. I always knew what reality was and the music and movies were just plain entertainment. I get so sick of the media writing that these kids are being influenced by this stuff. Perhaps parents should pay more attention to their kids.
