Subject: Why seek public office?

With the tenacity of today's media as well as the dogged nature of persuit waged by opposing political groups... why would anyone seek public office? Do these people enjoy having every aspect of their live's and the live's of their family dissected and paraded for all of primetime America? Is the calling to serve so great that you are willing to subject yourself and those you care most about to this witch hunt? Or, do these people view themselves as beyond reproach and able to weather any storm cast at them? For the life of me I just don't understand it.

I know I would definitely NOT want a great deal of events in my history to be feature stories on the evening news. Have any of you lead the life of a saint? Would you welcome the scrutiny of something like the Alito confirmation hearings?

edit: spelling and grammer.

Well if you take a look at most of them they are morons who make bad choices. I would guess that same skill set transfers over to their career making decisions

You are talking about 2 separate issues - running for public office and being appointed to a life-time position (SCOTUS).

Politicians run for office because they crave power.

In the case of SCOTUS appointees, anyone who is well qualified for the position can run circles 'round these idiots. Would a 15 year federal judge with Ivy league education really worry himself over what a former pest exterminator might ask him? I think not.

Like it or not... in today's world Supreme Court Justice is a political position.

I agree with Wookie.

I remember when they were looking to appoint the director of National Security. (I'm sorry that I don't remember names here) The nominated man was VERY QUALIFIED for the position because he had been in leadership in NYC on 9/11. However he was disqualified from the running because he had an illegal nanny a few years ago or something like that. What does one have to do with the other? Especially when it comes to national security?

Anytime someone runs for public office, the opposing party starts digging for dirt to discredit them. If it is something that idicates an on-going character flaw (like Clinton's womanizing and lying) then that is one thing. If it is a single stupid decision (like Clinton smoking dope in college) then it's another. However, the media (and opposing political parties) do not seem to want to differentiate. They just want something bad that they can embarass the opposition with.

Personally, I have led a decent life, but not a perfect life. I would be hesitant to run for public office because I'm afraid that something embarassing that I did in college might be plastered across the news.

As a result, we don't necessarily get the best people for the jobs at hand, IMO.

I think the point is that someone sworn to uphold the constitution should have a demonstrated respect for the law, and an issue like hiring illegals to watch your kids shows that, at least at some level, you don't respect the law.

If you're going to hold a poistion such as Director of National Security, you should be above reproach. If not, don't throw your hat in the ring.

A while back, I saw something funny about what would happen if Jesus ran for public office. And the comedian went on to talk about how the media would discredit him because he hung out with tax collectors and prostitutes. And he didn't respect the water safety rules when he walked on water. I think there were also some speculation about his sexuality since he wasn't married and hung out with 12 guys all the time. Silly things like that. But the point was made that even someone who is perfect would have trouble running for office.

Yes, but since most of his constituency were either current or former crack smokers themselves, I guess they could identify.

Heh.

He's an admitted alcoholic and does have a DUI issue on his record (not sure about a conviction), but I don't think he's ever admitted cocaine use.

I do think I read something about him having a special place in his heart for Mexican hookers, though.

Jesus would never run for office. He wasn't power-hungry and he was interested in helping people, not helping himself.

A free-thinking, bleeding heart liberal like Jesus couldn't even make it past the primaries!

Read Jon Stewart's "Democracy Inaction." He has a whole section on why the founding fathers would be unelectable today.

I don't need to read Stewart's book to know those free-thinking, hemp growing deists would never get elected today.

Although, Jefferson with his eloquent genius would run circles 'round the right-wing nutters like Gimme-a-hit-o-oxy-Limbaugh and Falafel-phile O'Reilly, he would probably think it far, far beneath him to engage in political reparte' with such mentally lazy chuckleheads.

I'll bet there were a fair share of crackheads like Limbaugh back in the Revolutionary day, too,  but history has forgotten them.

An aside, not a hijack....Ted Kennedy has started writing children's books. Great. Check them out at Beefeater.comHeehee. Stole that from Glenn Beck. But seriously, would you buy your kids a book written by Madonna or Ted Kennedy. Maybe they should collaborate and do a boozing/sluttin rhyming book for future...um....felons? Ummmm...hookers? Ummmm....politicians?

Gosh, how freakin' embarrassing. But I'd still buy a book written by him (The Commander and Chief does have access to spell check) over Madonna or Ted Kennedy any day.
