Subject: Can Someone Explain Gears To Me

I hear a lot of chatter on this site about compact cranks, triple cranks 11-33, 12-25's etc.  Can someone please explain in laymen terms what these are and what they mean?

I have a 2007 Kuota K-Factor with the what ever cassett and cranks that came on the bike.

Most of my riding is in the north ga mountains, but my "A" race is an iron distance event at the beach (FLAT).

I don't plan on changing anything out, but simply would like to know what all of this means.

THANKS

Gears make it easier or harder to turn the pedals and allow you to choose your cadence instead of having it forced upon you by the speed of the bike.  More teeth on the front rings = harder gear, more teeth on the rear cogs = easier gear.  Choosing between cranks, rings, cogsets, etc. is just deciding what gearing range is most appropriate for the type of rider you are and the terrain you are riding.  Nothing more.
