Subject: Why was stage 1 a stage?
May be in the stage 1 discussion thread, but haven't read it all.  I know there is a distance limit for a true "prologue", is that why it was a stage and not a prologue?

Correct.  If it is longer than around 9k (I think) it is not classified as a prologue.

The distance must not exceed 8 km in length to be considered a prologue. You might find this interesting also: a rider who fails to complete the prologue may continue in the race, being credited with the slowest time of any finisher. I do not think this rule would have applied this year since it was a stage.
