Subject: Running Plan? Pacing question
I'm training for my first tri (Sept 19), and following that up with a 1/2 Marathon (End of November).

My tri is a short sprint (300yd swim, 9.1m bike, 2m run).  I'm currently training at longer distances than the actual tri, just trying to build a good base into the offseason and for the 1/2 Marathon.

As a beginner, should I be building in some race pace training, especially for the running?  My long pace runs are avg around 12:00/mile (5m run this weekend) and I want my tri race pace to be at 10:00/mi or under (if possible).  Should I be building my base for long term, or working in some tempo runs during the week at the 10:00min pace?

I think most experienced runners on this board will answer that you don't have enough experience yet to add any sort of speed work.  Just keep working on the mileage for now.

But if you're worried about the speedier short run, I can tell you that running the 2 miles in your sprint will feel like a breeze if you've been training for more, esp with the half-marathon training.  I run my long runs at about 2 mph over the pace of my short sprint runs, so I know it's possible.   You can do anything for 20 minutes.    Good luck!

I too am a beginner.  From what I have read here and other running places; basically just work on distance/endurance for at least the first year.

You could do Fartleks one day a week.
