HSBC Triathlon Series
28C / 82F
Sunny
Total Time = 8h 00m
Overall Rank = 152/166
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 21/21
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5:15am - took a bath. Had some gluten free cereal and rice milk with a banana. Had a bagel and peanut butter about 1 hour after that. Packed up the night before - so not much else to it.
Event warmup:

Went for a jog - for a bout 200m, then took a 25m swim when I was in the water.
Swim
  • 47m 24s
  • 2000 meters
  • 02m 22s / 100 meters
Comments:

Not bad swim. Happy with it. Became a little more aggresive and not so timid in the water. Didnt just left people pass me by. Was about 1/2 way through when I remembered to focus on full strokes. Was happy with it. Best swim to date.
What would you do differently?:

Try and keep that focused mental state throughout entire swim as opposed to last half.
Transition 1
  • 02m 39s
Comments:

Great transition. Little dizzy still. Put my bike shoes on right this time.
Bike
  • 3h 29m 1s
  • 90 kms
  • 25.84 km/hr
Comments:

First 45km - 1 hour and 32 minutes, had 3:05 on my mind, 3:10 for sure...until the tailwind became the headwind now for the ride home! That hurt, and sunk me down big time. I have never been flying higher on the first 45km then I ever had...sucked me dry.
- Nutrition: Two back bottles, and front bottle emptied. 2 Cocachia bars adn one gel.
What would you do differently?:

Figure out why I'm causing my chain to come off - did it twice.
More focussed on the first 5km of the bike. It's tough after the swom - but have to get more focussed quickly.

Transition 2
  • 02m 2s
Comments:

Another great tranisition. Small transition zome - so have to keep that in mind too.
What would you do differently?:

Speed laces
Run
  • 3h 01m 42s
  • 21 kms
  • 08m 39s  min/km
Comments:

All good things must come to an end! This really put into a bad mood when I saw what was in store. The hills were brutal. I read the tri-newbies posting - but for some reason my brain just didnt comprehend it. Was way to difficiult for my skill set. Little disappointing.
What would you do differently?:

Speed laces! and train more!
Post race
Warm down:

No such thing!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Ummmm....the run! "Brick" is going to be my new nickname!

Event comments:

- Many of the mileage signs blew over - so was tough to judge - since it was a two looper if those signs were your or not...little frustrating.

Hey Phil,

Tough race, man.  At least you have a time to beat for the next time you do a half IM.  It's funny how the SWIM was what you were happiest with!  What if I had told you that 6 months ago??

The good thing is that you know what you need to work on and you have lots of time to work on it   CDA =smaller hills=good call KAte

Congratulations man.  Don't beat yourself up...it was no DNF!

Congrats on your race- that was a tough day for a tri. Times in that race were all significantly slower than last year due to the wind and warmer temps.
