Subject: Plan minute questions
I think I'm on one of the Sprint 12-week plans... I kind of customized it based on my base, strengths and timeline. I think it's a run focused (my weakness).

Anyway, last night I was scheduled for a 29-minute swim. I swam for 29 minutes and went 1300. This is my question: My first race the swim is 300... the next race it will be 500. At my "peak," I'm scheduled to swim 39 minutes. If my swim is only 300 or 500, why am I going such long distances? I am not fast, trust me.

This question applies to run and bike as well. Peak biking is 77 minutes and peak running is 39 minutes. Is this just an endurance thing so when I have to do all 3 back to back I'll be fine? It seems like a little overkill to me, but I've never done this so I don't know what to expect.

Thanks.

Correct.  It's just an endurance thing.  For those plans, I made the swim/bike and run times so the BOP'ers would be able to do the distance come race day...plus it assumes that a swim part of a sprint is 800meters.

Your swims are shorter so that is part of the differance, the rest due to gearing the plan for the BOP'er.  Most likely, many of the sprint plans 'could' be used for a good oly base for a person who may be a MOP'er or better.

You can make adjustments to the plan as you get your pace information and can guess the minutes you need to do to complete the race distance.

It's a combination of things and the natural limitations inherent in trying to create a one-size-fits-all training plan. For instance, my first race was a Sprint too but the swim was 750 yards. Also you're right in saying it's an "endurance thing".  Also, for many beginners, these times aren't overkill at all. It could easily take some people close to these times to complete part of course if they're just getting off the couch and getting into multisport.

Take a look at my first race report and these times seem perfectly reasonable.

BTW, I used the 16 minute swim focussed Sprint plan to prepare for my first race.
