Subject: Bike Fit - Newbie Question
Hi!!! This may seem as a really noob question but its always better to ask...

When i got my first real bike last year (Felt Z85), the LBS where i bought it helped me with the fitting process, checking my angles at the top of the pedal stroke, at the bottom, etc.

I am really happy with it, even though i some times get lower back pain in races, but i am pretty sure it has more to do from lack of strength and flexibility because i can do longer rides with no problems (did a 100 km ride and i was fine).

So, my question.. i have been reading about getting a bike fit and then choosing the bike. Also a LBS has a machine for DFU Fitting? Some kind of dynamic fitting, but i dont understand how do they fit you without your bike? or am i getting it wrong and i should first find my exact measurements with one of those fittings and then looking for a bike that can be fitted to those measurements? Can someone comment on the "proper" process of buying a new bike? or is what i did correct going to a LBS and find a bike for my budget and see if it fits?

I ask this because im thinking of buying a new carbon bike or a tri bike and i wanted to know how does a proper fitting work. Also to consider maybe buying used.

Thank you!!! Have a great trainning day!

For a tri bike, get the fitting first. A lot (most?) of LBSs will put the fitting towards the price of a bike you buy there.

Your Z85 is a nice bike and you probably got fit pretty good. It's a road bike, though, and it's a different fitting process.

Check with your LBS for a tri bike fitting. RETUL, FIST, and a number of others. They'll be able to do it before you buy a bike. Takes a few hours and they ask a whole bunch of questions, yank you around on a massage table and see how flexible you are in about a hundred different ways.

Haha! Thank you very much, ill see if i can get my fitting first then... So in case i pay for a fitting study i imagine they should give me something printed with their findings in case i choose to go some other store for different brands etc, so the other store can use it?

The thing is i can do that here in Mexico but i'd rather buy my bike in the US (30% cheaper at least).

Thank you for the feedback.
