Oh my word !!!! I had the pleasure or displeasure if you will of previewing the bike course for this event .. YIKES !!! talk about some nasty hills. Maybe its just because I am newbie to these events but this seems like an awfully tough bike course.
And the run... the website says a gradual 1% for miles 1-3 and 7-10 .. right.. more like a 1% start a 3% grade at the turn around.. nothing FLAT about this course. I am kind of wishing I had previewed the course prior to registering and not going off of the few reviews that were on the event website.
Got my work cut out for me .. but I will prevail

WELL I DID IT !!!!!! Completed my first Half IM on Saturday and I am officially HOOKED ....
Finished in 7:13:39 which was under my goal time of 7:30 so I am happy with that. Need to do a lot of work on my swim leg.

Great job, alk926! I also completed my first HIM, though I wish it was truly HIM distance. Still, I wasn't complaining that the tough, tough bike ended four miles early. I would like to do that race again, though I can't imagine us getting as lucky as we did with the weather.

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

I was not an official; I simply observed the race and the officials doing their thing. Here is what I saw:

I just had a couple of problems, I could count the number of triathlons I had contested at zero. Secondly, I could count on one hand the number of times I had been swimming in the last 17 years.

This half Ironman plan covers many weeks of challenging, but attainable training for someone who has some endurance experience, and ideally some Olympic distance races within the past season.
