Hockomock Area YMCA
70F / 21C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 06m 1s
Overall Rank = 28/186
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 5/22
Pre-race routine:

Got no sleep (never can sleep before a race), woke up 3 hours before the start, had my raising ezekiel toast with peanut butter and a yogurt, triple checked my gear, loaded up and went. Got to the venue 1:30 before race time, lots of helping newbies out and chatting with race organizers (knew them all from volunteering for the newbie clinics).
Event warmup:

Lots of walking followed by 200m or so swim warmup as close to the race meeting as I could
Swim
  • 09m 1s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 03s / 100 yards
Comments:

Close to same time as my first time at this venue (my first ever Tri), which is good considering how little I've same the past couple months
What would you do differently?:

More swim training!!
Transition 1
  • 02m 49s
Comments:

It's a long run, still slotted in the top 3rd of T1 times. Just got the damn bibs stuck on my heels.
Bike
  • 27m 40s
  • 9 miles
  • 19.52 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt mostly good on the bike, except climbing the two hills. MAN am I dreadfully slow at climbing. All the way in the granniest of granny gears (39/28) and I still had to get out of the saddle on the first one.
What would you do differently?:

Practice hills!
Transition 2
  • 01m 16s
Comments:

Real simple T2 improvement this time - grabbing hat and race belt and putting them on while running. Don't know why I never did that before.
What would you do differently?:

That one went pretty well, just a little more T2 practice I guess by actually hitting all my scheduled brick workouts
Run
  • 25m 12s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

For this runner, the run is becoming my worst of the three disciplines. Faster than last year at least but still slower than my first year.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure, I'd hate to become run focused at the cost of my swim and bike.
Post race
Warm down:

Walking around chatting, banana, orange, plenty of water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Below average swimming ability, no hill climbing ability on the bike, a blister on my heel during the run plus not pushing as hard as I used to on the run.

Event comments:

Really like this event both for beginner friendliness plus overall - it's short so welcoming to newbies but still challenging for those who want to go faster. I volunteered at the newbie clinics this year and the race organizers are just awesome.

Isn't it just fun to enjoy a race and not worry about anything?  Nice day out there.
