When I joined BT back in 2005, there was a long-time contributor (and forum moderator, back when there was lively forum traffic that frequently veered off-course) "The Bear."  Some might say he was one of BT's resident curmudgeons.

The Bear was an experienced cyclist and often contributed to "what bike should I buy?" questions.

Related to that question was "how much should I spend on a bike?" and The Bear's general answer to that was:

"Spend $1 for every mile you rode in the past year, (or expect to ride after buying it)"

I've not been riding like I did in the past, but I bought a new commuter bike at the beginning of this year for $400.
(The past 2 years, I've commuted on my nearly 30-year-old mountain bike.

and this week, I logged my 400th mile!

Cheers to The Bear!

I spent just under $300 for my first TT bike, $1500 for bike #2 + $1000 for race wheel a few years later, and $1600 for bike #3 (that came with race wheels).  My biggest bike year I was over 8,000 miles.  I average around 3,000 a year so 30,000 miles over the past 10 years at a cost of $4,400.00. :-)

I have also put about $1,500 into completely rebuilding bikes.  I am hard on them and after 10,000 mile I have to replace about everything on them.  :-)

I wish I would have know The Bear.  There were lost of great people on BT when I started a decade ago.  Lots of knowledge to soak up for sure.

That $1 per mile ridden per year is about spot-on for me.  And agreed on some of those great mentors who dispensed great advice - I learned a ton from folks on here.

Here's to The Bear!!
