Subject: Dumb Beginner Question
I noticed that in my work plan the daily workouts really dont stipulate mileage. It seems as though if the duration of a workout is X then there should also be a target on the miles logged for that paticular duration..... is this correct?? Or is it not as importand to reach a target in mileage in the begining? Please advise.

Everybody is going to have a different pace, so a run may be 30 minutes.  In that 30 minutes someone may only be able to do 2.5 miles, while someone else can do 3.5.  Thats why workouts are more based on time, so that the workout duration is the same, but the intensity is relative to each individual.

Also, environmental conditions are going to be different and that's going to have an effect. 30 minutes at a particular effort level is the same no matter what the terrain, temperature etc. 3 miles can be 2 very different workouts depending on the environmental conditions.

The training plans are devised such that if you follow them you should be able to cover the target race distances without any problems.
