![]() Run
Comments: Started at a comfortable pace. Passed some and was passed by others. Was more concerned about conserving energy for the bike. What would you do differently?: Nothing. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: No problems finding my bike; not many left in the transition area. What would you do differently?: Recheck equipment after setting up in transition area. Had a minor equipment problem that could have been fixed prior to the race. Lost a few seconds. ![]() Bike
Comments: Was familiar with course and opted to leave the vintage Centurian 12 speed at home and use the mountain bike (slicked) because of the lighter weight and lower gearing. Speeds were as low as 8-9 mph, the highest was 40 mph. What started as a more casual ride changed when the same rider passed a couple of times shaking a fist and yelling "YES" !!! I decided fine, I can play that game too and left her in the dust. I made the turnaround, had another gel, and enjoyed the descent. Drank the last of my gatorade/water mix from the camelbak prior to crossing into transition. What would you do differently?: Not a thing. ![]() Transition 2
Comments: Smooth. What would you do differently?: A water station was available in transition, but I think I'll start leaving an extra water bottle there in the future. ![]() Run
Comments: Felt sluggish at first. Concentrated on running tall and raising my knees until my second wind kicked in. What would you do differently?: Nothing ![]() Post race
Warm down: Stretching. Event comments: I think the run and bike segments are the same as the Mount Taylor Winter Quadrathlon...hmmm maybe I need to start X-country skiing again and find some snowshoes. Overall the race felt good and I set a personal best for this distance, cutting 7 minutes off my time from the Defined Fitness Duathlon six months ago. My wife also raced and I'd call out and cheer her on when I'd see her. Didn't stop for any smooches this time. She took first in her age group and was all surprised when she found out she got a medal. Whe was in the restroom cleaning up when her name was called out, and everyone whistled at me when I picked it up for her. Last updated: 2004-09-18 12:00 AM

Worked late. Did one last equipment check. Slept a couple of hours. Had a bowl of grapenuts at the house and McGriddle on the road. Drove an hour to the race sight. Stopped to talk with one of the traffic officers I worked on Torch Run with earlier in the year.
Stretching and a light jog. Downed a gel and gatorade/ water mix before race start.
