Member 6 | Subject: I am beginning to PANIC... fat TriathleteI am really beginning to panic, to the point where I am not sure I will go to the LakeSide Try a Tri... I am really over weight (about 70lbs overweight) and although I have trained, I am not nearly as ready as I would like to be. I know i can bike and run the distace, since i have trained bricks a few times... but I have never swam that distance in open water... (400m) I had a private swimming lesson two days ago that built up my confidence a little, but I am petrified of everyone being out of the water and me being half way through.... Am I being ridiculous? I do not like to quit... I am not a quitter, and I love the thrill of crossing a finish line, but I hate the thought of being the fattest girl there. Any words of encouragement would be greatly appreciated...

Member 37![]() | Subject: RE: I am beginning to PANIC... fat Triathletehey i think that is everyones fear, it has been mine on every event i have entered. be it running, duathlons or triathlons. 3 things, first you wont be the last person second, you will not care or even think about that once you get going. third, you will regret not trying if you bail. the best piece of advice is to stay at the back and get in the water at your own pace and forget what everyone else is doing, you are going to be suprised by how many other people will stroll into the water doing the same thing. probably half the field. keep your pace slow, calm and comfortable. dont even think of this as part of the race. i am gearing up for my first HIM, and it feels like i have to face those same swim demons again, will i be last, cut off, not finish. but i know i can do it and i will be so proud of myself when i finish the swim, nothing better than heading back into shore on that first open water swim. feel free to PM me |

you can always breast stroke, and you can always stop and hold on to the buoy or kayaks and rest - no penalty as long as the boat is not moving.
you CAN do it and yeah, you will totally regret it if you don't.
come let us know when you officially become a triathlete! |

Expert 755![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() SF-Bay Area | Subject: RE: I am beginning to PANIC... fat TriathleteYour reaction is completely normal. Self-doubt and fear is a byproduct of facing the unknown. Overcoming that fear is part of the process that is triathlon racing. It is something I've faced and overcome each and everytime I've stepped up in distance. Rest assured you will be more capable than you think come race day. Sure, you'll have butterflies (up the wazoo) until the starting horn goes off...but once it does...you'll just focus on the task at hand and before you know it you'll be out of the water. Remember: DFL > DNF > DNS Good luck! |

Extreme Veteran 478![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Houston, Texas | Subject: RE: I am beginning to PANIC... fat TriathleteMany people will say that you won't be last and they're typically right. My first triathlon was an olympic distance and my swim was worse than awful. For 1500m my time was 49:24 or a pace of 3:18 / 100m. For my age group of 99 guys the official results list me finishing 100. That's right I finished 100 out of 99. I was so bad that I finished AFTER the last place swimmer. There's no way you can be ranked worse than my swim. That type of swim made it difficult to complete the rest of the race but I did finish and I was so proud of my accomplishment that I have continued my training and really hit the pool hard this year. Your panic is nothing more than race anxiety and I have no doubt that your training will get you to the finish line. Above all else remember to have fun while racing. |

Expert 932![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Madison | Subject: RE: I am beginning to PANIC... fat TriathleteYou can do it! I have done three sprints and have seen women and men of all shapes and sizes. I find it very encouraging and inspirational to see someone out there trying their hardest and finishing what they set out to do. We could all be at home eating chips on the couch, right? At my first sprint, I was so nervous before hand (as was just about everyone else!). A women in my wave told everyone - don't worry, you know you can swim! And it was true! If the front crawl gets too tiring, do the breast stroke or even the backstroke. In all three of my races, I floated on my back and kicked as hard as I could when I was tired - and I finished. It wasn't pretty, but I did it - and you can too. Someone has to finish last, the key word there is FINISH! And it probably won't be you in last place! Good luck and keep us posted. Triathlon pits us face to face against many of the things all people avoid. Fear...of failure, of success, of what others think... physical pain, self doubt etc. Through the right of passage of training, racing, and finishing you will lean forward, kiss each of these demons gently on the forhead.....and fear them no more. EVERYONE goes through these feelings. You CAN do it! |

Expert 1014![]() Virginia | Subject: RE: I am beginning to PANIC... fat Triathleteyou will be FINE!! just do what you trained to do and run your own race. when i did my first tri i was one of the bigger girls there. i did my race and was the very last person out on the course. but actually, time wise, i wasn't last place, there were a few people with times slower than mine. so in the end, you really just have to do your own thing and not worry about what everyone else is doing. |

I was worried if I could even finish. You CAN do this. Tell yourself everyday how powerful you are as a woman and an athlete. That's right...YOU ARE AN ATHLETE! No matter what your size, what your shape, or how fast you are, you are taking care of your body and putting it all out there. Race with your heart and you'll get through it and you may even love it, like the rest of us. As for the swim, take the advice of others and do whatever you need to do to get through it. You'll be amazed by how many others just aren't strong swimmers, no matter their experience! Last of all, remember that the big accomplishment is the journey to get to the start line. You've done the hard work, now just enjoy the accomplishment that comes with finishing your first triathlon! Melanie |

I used to routinely get passed by several waves after mine (my swim technique was terrible). The first few times I was pretty scared, and would switch to backstroke. Whatever gets you through the water is fine. And most races have pretty attentive kayak support, so if you look like you are struggling, they will be right there. And of course, you can always call to them. And for what it's worth, I am now a MOP swimmer - practice and technique make a big difference (I used to be 50 pounds lighter which made me a faster biker and runner, but had no impact on the swim) |

Extreme Veteran 377![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Western, Mass | Subject: RE: I am beginning to PANIC... fat Triathletethe panic might get worse, too. It did for me. I was the last swimmer out of the water, last in AG, last Clyde, last under the age of 70. I ran across the finish with my head high and my hands high, because I was a winner for doing something to better myself, something that most people were never do, even once.
Everyone has these doubts, but one you start, it gets fun, hard maybe painful, but fun. Noone regrets crossing the finish line, but many regret not crossing the start line.

Everyone has given you some great encouragement, and I agree with everyone and don't have anything to add except this factoid: the last triathlete through the finish shute receives the most applause from the crowd and fellow competitors!

I would take the attitude you are not competing against others but are doing this for yourself. 2. If you are worried about being able to finish the swim, think about the pace you think you can do and for the first half of the swim, attempt to set a pace for yourself that is significantly SLOWER than that pace. This should help take the pressure to finish off. If you want to pick up the pace at the half way point, go for it. I suspect you will do better than you think you can. |

If you do not relax is when you will panic. Second no one ever feels they are ready for the race. You just have to go out and try to race your race. Third I do not think anyone else will ever do worse in a tri than I ever did. total time for me 3:08:29 swim which was my worse was 56:02 over 800 meters so I avg 6:22 per 100/yards I was 3rd last out of the water including the Oly swimmers though they did get a 5 minute head start. As for being 70 lbs over weight. I was 90 lbs over weight for my first 4 tris. 2 of the 4 of those were HIMs. The weight will slow you down but it will not stop you unless you let it. |

I did my first race 2 years ago and my wife joked with me that I only participated in an edurance event. What she meant was that as slow as I was going there is no way it could be considered racing! I am now able to race and you will too. Take the first step. Just Jump! |

Is there anyway you can swim that distance in open water before the race? Is your fear based on your swimming ability (or lack of?), or just the fear of open water? The swim can be dangerous. As you know, people die in the water. Not on the bike or run. It's not to be played with. I would encourage you to swim the distance in open water before the race, just to know how you will react. A lot of people get panic attacks when swimming in open water. You want to know you will NOT do this on race day. OK, enough of that... if you know you can get through the swim you will be fine on the bike and run. Don't worry about your size or anything like that. Anyone who is out there exercising and trying to make themselves better get nothing but respect. |

Did I mention, DO IT? Seriously - remember that ANY swim stroke is allowed in a tri. You can breast stroke, side stroke, dog paddle, whatever gets you from point A to point B. Heck, if the water is shallow enough, you can walk it. Also, it won't matter if you're the last person out of the water. I have actually been the last out of the water, and it wasn't bad at all - I had my own cheering section of all the kayakers following me! The best thing that calmed my pre-first-tri nerves was the RD had a DVD of the previous year's race playing at packet pickup. I watched and all I could think was, "WOW, look at all those NORMAL people doing this! They're not all super-athletes!!" Go for it. You won't regret it. |

You already have the right attitude by KNOWING you are NOT a quitter. Remind yourself of that during the race and you will be OK. The only other thing I would highly recommend, specially in the swim....BE PATIENT. If you become impatient because you want to go faster or because people are passing you, you start racing somebody else's race and you might burn yourself out. good luck |

And even if it is, you're likely to get nothing but respect and support from most folks out there. Remember, everyone out there is there for YOU because it's YOUR DAY! Even if you are last across the line -- just consider this one training for the NEXT triathlon! (I've been last lots of times and I've almost always survived the experience). |
