Master of puppets. Best album ever? Discuss. (Welcome home was just on the radio. Possibly my favorite song)

Thought provoking....

My first Metallica album was Black and is still in my top 5 all time favorite albums of any genre.  Enter Sandman still gets my blood pumping and often finds its way onto every run I go on.

There's just something about a guy's first that has special meaning.....  Yes, I'm still talking about Metallica.

My first was ride the lightening. Then I picked up master, kill em all and garage days. I got justice and the black albums when they released, all of them I still listen to on occasion, but never got into the later albums.

CD: appetite was very good, but I like Metallica more. Alice is my all time favorite.

I saw Metallica and GNR live during their '92 tour together.  Amazing.  I give mad props to Metallica...I thought their live performance was tight and very true to their albums.  For what they do, it was excellent.  I just give the edge to Axl as he's a mad man on stage with "triathlete-like never-ending energy!"    Both, excellent bands.

GNR was good.  Metallica was great.  big difference.  Metallica has something GNR never did.  Longevity.  They had equal, if not better early stuff, and more of it.  GNR had a great breakout album, one of the best of all time, but then faded with years of different lineups, drama, sub par live shows, no shows, drama, drama, etc.

To the OP.  Master was probably their best cover to cover album.  Song by song, hard to not include many from ride the lightning, more than a few from kill em' all.  I personally favor Justice for all as it was my first, then I worked backwards.  The Black album now is allright, when compared to everything else, but at the time, miserable.

I'm a big Ride the Lightning fan myself. I feel like Trapped Under Ice is the most over looked song in their catalogue. CN I assume you mean Alive in Chains and not Alice Cooper? I'm also a huge AIC fan.

If the production was better, I'd vote Justice.  But because it was screwed up, I'm going with Lighting.  And Creeping Death.

I saw Metallica in a small venue just when they released Ride the Lightning. I was right up to the stage and could almost touch the microphone stand. I still have the concert t-shirt and a grainy photo of Cliff doing his bass solo. Kill 'Em All will always be my favorite album/production for power, speed, loudness, and raw energy. Hit the Lights and No Remorse are my favorite tunes.

Ha. Yeah AIC not Alice Cooper. Easily my favorite of all time

While we're reminiscing, my first concert was Metallica. Ozzy/Metallica in 86 I think. I did see them with GNR in 92, and a hand full of times in between. Awesome band live.

I saw the Metallica/GNR show as well back in 92 in Denver.  Body Count opened, then Metallica , then GnR.  Metallica blew the pants off GnR and this is coming from the 2nd biggest GnR fan on BT.    Axl was off his game and walked off stage for almost an hour while the rest of the band tried to keep 70,000 fans entertained.  Axl finally came back on stage after about an hour and went through the motions.  Worst of 3 GnR shows I have seen.  I have also seen Metallica 3 times and they are true to their fans.  Ride is great...Justice is my favorite.  I also have a CD that was never released, Mandatory Metallica.  A friend of mine gave it to me back almost 25-years ago.  Kind of a greatest hits of sorts...but Metallica never received any airplay back then.  So really, they didn't have any hits...just kickazz music!

I  used to regard as a a great album, but Battery is the only song I would listen to these days. Kill'em all gets a regular full spin, and RtL also shows on my play list once or twice a month.

Out of the big 4, Slayer is the only band I still listen to and even buy their new albums, nowadays with Dave back in the band. When I am in the mood for metal, I tend to turn to the modern bestial black metal stuff. My kids roll their eyes, but whatever.

Almost in a replay, this same thing happened in the Tacoma dome with GnR on tour with Skid Row.  Axl threw a tantrum 2 songs into the set and we waited for like 45 minutes for them to come back on.  One of the worst shows ever.

Fast forward.  Metallica in Pullman wa on one of the Justice tours=Priceless.  2.5 hours of nonstop classics.

AIC was a great band as well.  I saw them on the clash of the titans tour with Anthrax, Megadeth, and Slayer.  They opened up with the best set of the evening out of all of them.

What happened between then and now?  Disposable Heroes, Sanitarium, Master of Puppets?  Are you going with it's not heavy enough, or they sold out?

For me, early Metallica is the only Metallica. Master of Puppets was the last of their early sound. After Justice they went main stream in my opinion. I really lost interest in them when Lars revealed his true calling as a tool. Kill em' All is my favorite mainly because when I've had enough BS in a day I crank Seek and Destroy (try it some time!). Ride the Lightning and MoP are right up there.

That said, not huge Metallica fan. More of a Megadeth fan. Did I show my colors there?

Master is my fav, and KEA, RtL, and AJFA coming in next. Master is my go to pre-race music, althought my alltime fav song by them is "The Shortest Straw" off AJFA. Feel like I could run through a brick wall after listening to it!

I, too, was one of the many who attended the Metallica/GnR circus back in '92, in Foxboro, MA. Both bands at the top of their game, and no drama/BS from Axl. Just a great night. It was also the most out of control thing I've ever attended. it felt as if at any second the who place was going to erupt into a riot.

Mark me down as another vote for Ride the Lightening. I really got into Metallica from the Black album, but the more I listened the more the old stuff did it for me. I think Death Magnetic really could have been a pretty good album had it not been for James's vocals. He has just about nothing left in the pipes. I saw them on the Death Magnetic tour for my 4th show and came away a little disappointed. I was very impressed with Trujillo though, if not for him I would say they should stop touring all together. I will probably see them if they come around again though.

A couple of years after MoP, I discovered better (IMO of course) options in terms of thrash - like Vio-lence, Kreator, Celtic Frost, etc. Battery is still a highlight for me - it's so feral, it just cannot be denied... but the rest of the album nowadays is a non-starter, probably because James's voice is mixed too loud or something.

I always wondered what would have happened to the band had Cliff lived through the bus crash. Would be interesting to see.

Likewise on the '92 GNR/Metallica show in Buffalo.  Up on the upper tier of Rich Stadium I got to witness some dumbazz launch one of the giant "stadium-size" toilet paper rolls down onto some poor unsuspecting folks on the 1st level...leaving a chick down there pretty bloodied-up.  Needless to say, we witnessed said dumbazz get pointed out and beaten up pretty badly when the folks on the bottom level spotted the launcher.  I also couldn't believe what I was watching on the field.  The mosh pits were insane.  Folks were literally being body-slammed from over peoples' heads onto the turf, which at that time was concrete with a thin layer of astro turf on top.  (this was in the daylight, during Metallica's set...by the time Guns took the stage, it was getting dark)

Hetfield and Rose were both amazing.  Both sounded incredible.  They had/have very different stage presence.  Both very cool for who they are and what they deliver.  My Metallica highlight was Fade to Black.

Toss up between Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning, but I lean toward RtL.  Bought both at the same time and wore both cassettes out in near record time back in '89. Black album was the last one that I really liked... nothing after it has been the same.

As for GnR - I've got a bit of an oddity.  Most people have heard of Use Your Illusion I & II, but I actually have a Use Your Illusion III cassette at home.  I have all three, still in their original shrink wrapping.  Bought them at a market in Bahrain in '93.
