Certainly not what I expected, which was some white kids feeling ridiculed.  Our whole country is way too uptight.  We are much too easily offended.

I think it's funny, and is a pretty perfect example of being overly PC.  From what it sounds like, "redneck day" was a regular occurrence at my high school.  Once black kids starting wearing the shirts with a big X for Malcolm X, our country boys started wearing Confederate Flag shirts, noting this is my X.  Everyone got bored of it after a couple of months.  From the story is doesn't appear there were any racially aimed activities. Just adults over reacting.  Now the kids will just want to wear the shirts more.

If people stopped getting offended by the Confederate flag, it would go away pretty quickly.

Won't happen. How can someone dictate your actions if they aren't offended? It's a power thing, not an offense thing. It's easier to garner sympathy if one is offended than if one just doesn't like something another is doing.

conversely, if people stopped displaying the confederate flag so proudly, it would go away as well.  it most certainly serves as a symbol of "white pride" (for lack of a better way to express it) for many, and should be offensive.  people know not to wear swastikas on their clothing.  how is this different?

The Klan always has a US flag in every parade, demonstration and get together I've ever seen in any newscast. We need to eliminate that flag as well, right? It most certainly serves as a symbol of "white pride" for many.

You beat me to it. I'm OK with the principal talking to the student about the Confederate Flag, but the rest of it is nonsense. I smell frivolous lawsuit.

Over the years I have learned that some people will find any excuse to be offended, and that other people will use any excuse to offend other people.

Life is way to short to go around making other people angry or getting angry.

Take a deep breath smell the flowers and enjoy life.

The big question is where do the ducks stand on all this? Let's face it, if they wanted to, they could make things very messy for all of us.

Geese are evil. Especially right now around here as they are breeding and very aggressive. Ducks are cute, geese are flying rats. Oh wait, that's pigeons.

My high school was the Southside Rebels, complete with a Confederate flag, Dixie as the fight song and the drill team girls were called the Confederates. Not one student/school or parent ever had a problem with any of the flags songs or anything, other than they were are rival school while I was there. yes we had all races of people at our school.

Sometimes people make more out of something than needs to be!

There is a school in my area with Rebels as the mascot.  In 2000 the removed the confederate flag as the official school flag and banned it entirely from school activities in 2012.  They still have Dixie as the school song.

I get why people are offended by the flag and have no problem with school districts changing over time.

2 items stand out to me in Daniel's original article (I think you'd all enjoy reading this first rather then reply based only on this thread):

"I think every one of us hates it when we're told, 'Don't feel that way,'" she said. "But they are honestly offended by it. It reflects a very bad chapter in their personal or cultural experience. That needs to be acknowledged, discussed and accepted."

For his part, attorney Montoya said students have a First Amendment right to wear a Confederate flag and engage in free speech.

But he warned that the line between free speech and harassment is easily breached and said a district could be held liable for allowing a racially hostile education environment.

"Those schools are paid for by everyone, including African-Americans and other minorities, and they have the right to attend school free of harassment," Montoya said.

So, there you have it: Political correctness is a fine line, not a coarse cut. Caution to not cross that fine line needs to be paramount in decision making in public institutions where free speech contant and intent has many interpretations and ALL of them are valid.

I say we ban panties. Or maybe have restrictions on the amount of material used in a panty.

Way too much bunching going on!
