Elite Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() OK, so I'm going to hijack this thread with a bummer post, because I am very sad and I think only you people will give me the sympathy I am looking for. I found out last week that the reason my beloved Yellow Lab has been so sick is because he has cancer. Up until about a month ago, he seemed fine! Several hundred dollars and many vet visits later, we find out we are too late to help him, and even if we wanted to try anyway, it would be thousands of dollars that we don't have, and would have to go on the credit card. My heart wants to do it, but it would be financial devastation for our family. Since it has progressed to the point where he has now all but stopped eating, and has lost a bunch of weight, and is not really himself anymore (meaning it's just so evident that he is suffering) we have decided to put him down on Monday. He is 7 years old, and we got him when he was 8 weeks. He's been a wonderful, very intelligent, very "present" dog. Dog lovers know that that means when you look at him, there's truly someone in there looking back at you. I love that dog, and I am going to miss him very very much. The thought of what life will be like on Tuesday makes me feel like someone kicked me in the stomach. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Wow, that just brought tears to my eyes. I know what that's like my friend. The dog I had growing up had a stroke one day and then couldn't move her back legs and it seemed like she really had no idea what happened to her and why all of a sudden she was crippled. It was so heartbreaking to see a dog who was so spunky and fun at one time look at you with eyes just saying "help me" and there's nothing you can do. I feel for you and my thoughts are with you. It's truly a member of the family and I know you will cherish the happiness your dog brought to you and your family as well as how much happiness you brought to your dog. Remember you're doing whats best and alleviating any undue suffering. Peace. |

Giver ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Tania, you're doing the right thing. Treating him will only slightly prolong his life, and he'll just suffer further. I know it's hard...so hard. When Stimpy, our first dog, got to be about 10 and I started realizing she wouldn't be around forever, I decided to get a tattoo of her paw print. SHe died about a year ago, with cancer just like your dog. She went very quickly, thankfully, but when she did I was sadder than I've ever been before. She was an amazing dog, and I cherish her memory. Every time I look at that tattoo, it makes me smile and think about her. I miss her, but she's still with me. |

Elite Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Tania, I am so sorry to read about your dog. It's a hard decision to make, but it sounds like it's the right one. Cancers in animals can get so bad so fast. Be strong. Give him his favourite foods this week. I'm not good at words for things like this, but know that I'm sorry you're having to go through it. |

Elite Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks, guys. I knew you'd understand my pain. I won't weep and wail anymore, you all can go back to posting cute pics of your doggies. I like looking at them! |

I lost my black lab/golden retriever mix to cancer in 1999. You have to realize you are doing the right thing. When my dog wouldn't get up to greet me at the door, I knew it was time. One week later, we rescued a dog from our local shelter and he has been absolutely wonderful! You can see the pic from my previous post. I'll never forget my dog ,Reno. In fact, I still have his picture on the refrigerator. If you need to talk, feel free to PM me. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Tania, so sorry to read about your dog. I lost one of my lizards (I had her for 8 years, she got really sick and did lots of stuff with the vet to no avail) this past winter and it was pretty tough. I still have her sister and that helps, but it's not the same. I don't know the relationship you have with your dog, but if the two of you know that it's the right thing to do, then it is. No one can tell you differently. Much peace. -Frank |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() How many dogs does it take to change a light bulb? 1. Golden Retriever: The sun is shining, the day is young, we've got our whole lives ahead of us, and you're inside worrying about a stupid burned out bulb? 2. Border Collie: Just one. And then I'll replace any wiring that's not up to code. 3. Dachshund: You know I can't reach that stupid lamp! 4. Rottweiler: Make me. 5. Boxer: Who cares? I can still play with my squeaky toys in the dark. 6. Lab: Oh, me, me!!!!! Pleeeeeeeeeze let me change the light bulb! Can I? Can I? Huh? Huh? Huh? Can I? Pleeeeeeeeeze, please, please, please! 7. German Shepherd: I'll change it as soon as I've led these people from the dark, check to make sure I haven't missed any, and make just one more perimeter patrol to see that no one has tried to take advantage of the situation. 8. Jack Russell Terrier: I'll just pop it in while I'm bouncing off the walls and furniture. 9. Old English Sheep Dog: Light bulb? I'm sorry, but I don't see a light bulb! 10. Cocker Spaniel: Why change it? I can still pee on the carpet in the dark. 11. Chihuahua: Yo quiero Taco Bulb. Or "We don't need no stinking light bulb." 12. Greyhound: It isn't moving. Who cares? 13. Australian Shepherd: First, I'll put all the light bulbs in a little circle... 14. Poodle: I'll just blow in the Border Collie's ear and he'll do it. By the time he finishes rewiring the house, my nails will be dry. How many cats does it take to change a light bulb? Cats do not change light bulbs. People change light bulbs. So, the real question is: "How long will it be before I can expect some light, some dinner, and a massage?" |

It's all about happiness now... Gibby's beautiful... Thank you. (double sniff). I already have a million paper photos of him, but the digital is going to need a new memory card before this is over. Gibby rallied slightly the last few days, so I think my husband's resolve has caved about Monday. We are two very pathetic people right now! |
