Welcome to the Running Challenge

Witches and Warlocks have been known to be both good and bad but on all hallows eve it is the evil kind to be feared so put one your best scary face and grab your broomstick!

Your team line up is:

You will also need to nominate/select/volunteer a Team Leader whose role will be to collect the commitments for each runner and collect your team results every Monday.

Your running time must be logged in your BT Log for verification purposes, but you are responsible for reporting your weekly results to your Team Leader on Mondays, this is done by posting an update in your team thread in the challenges forum unless the team prefers another method.

Attached to this post is an excel excel spreadsheet to be used by the Team Leader for your team tracking and should be sent to me on Tuesdays AM so I can get an challenge update post in the forum by Wednesday each week. The spreadsheet includes the details of any team members who have already made a challenge commitment.

I will be maintaining a Team Leaders thread for any queries, questions etc so if there are any problems please let me know.

HELLO TEAM! This is my first challenge. I've been on BT since mid July '07 when a friend convinced me to give tri's a shot when I redeployed.  So everyone knows, I'm in the US Army and have been in Baghdad since Aug '06 (second trip, was here Feb '04-Feb '05).  This is my LAST MONTH in this place, so what better way than to celebrate than with a BT Run Challenge.  I hated running for years, finally found myself somewhat decent at it and got past a MAJOR mental block that made me hate it. My only goal, for the longest time, was just getting faster on our physical fitness test (2 mile run).  BUT THEN I came on this second deployment and found myself working 12 hour shifts (9-9) on a HQs staff and about to go insane. I signed up for the Army 10-Miler they had here last Oct, and figured that was the FARTHEST I ever needed to run. But then I got hooked, got a good running buddy, and we have been running 20-30+ miles a week since.  I did the 10-miler last OCT, a 10K, and a 1/2 Marathon since I've been here. I run the Army 10-miler (here) again on Sunday (7 Oct) and am looking to CRUSH my time from last year (87 minutes last year).  I'm signed up for the Houston 1/2 Marathon in January and will do my first marathon at the Austin Marathon in February.  Nov, and possibly Dec, will see a significant drop in my running distances due to REDEPLOYMENT and everything that's part of that. So, I have a lot of mileage (135) pledged for this month.  It's a little less than the last two months, but that's because we'll get fairly busy training our replacements.  So, I hope to do, at a minimum 135 miles, and maybe more than that depending upon what time demands we end up getting here.  My running, for most part, should be done by 29 OCT due to our COMING HOME!

I am excited about becoming more of a "part" of this community. I've TOTALLY love it up to this point and look forward to pushing all of us towards a goal of WINNING this challenge by all of us meeting or exceeding our goals while staying healthy and having fun! Let's tear it BMT!
~Brittany~

P.S.
I don't have the time to be a team leader, and my time zone is about 8 hours off the east coast too.

Good morning Black Magic Team!!!

I'm Annabanana and I live in Central FL. I've been around BT for a few years, and am still good friends with teammates from my first challenge, several of whom have gone on to do HIM and IM's this year! I, however, have been pretty stagnant this year, and have put on about 5-10lbs I don't want, and this challenge will help kick me in the booty and keep me motivated to move, plus bring some more great folks into my BT life!

I have a son in Kindergarden, and I pretty much can't use being a SAHM as an excuse anymore. He's very independent now, and in school all day. I have recently started working again pretty much full time, but I work from home and can set my own schedule, so no excuses there either.

For my running history - well, for years I LOVED only cycling. I was a long distance touring type cyclist. Then a few years of working on the road brought running to my life. I HATED it at first, in fact, it was something I swore I wouldn't do, but I've learned to never say never. LOL, I toed the line at my first half marathon and SWORE I'd never need to run further, but by the following year was running my first marathon, and then took up trail running and ultras. That's how I met DH as a matter of fact. Since having DS, we both slipped back into less active lifestyles, tho'.

I took up triathlons a few years ago because it's too darn hot to run all summer in FL. I've done a few sprint tri's and one Olympic last year, but have also been dealing with perimenopause crap, and often get off my training for no good reason other than I'm crabby, depressed, anxiety attacks, heart palpitations, hot flashes, no sleep, etc. (TMI for the guys, most likely). The thing is, exercise is the one thing that helps the most with all that, so if I can stick with it, I start feeling better.

I have used the stupid amoeba scare as an excuse this summer, also, and haven't signed up for any more tris (last one was in August), or done any lake swims (or pool swims). Cycling 'takes too much time' so I've slacked on that too. I don't have as easy of an excuse with running, so I want to focus on that for now. I am hoping to build to a half marathon by the end of the year, but want to be realistic, too, so I signed up for 50 miles for the challenge. That's a little more than three 4 mile runs each week, which is my usual distance lately. I'd love to blow away my total and surprise myself, but I want to be supportive and not set myself up to fail, so 50 sounds like a good number.

I'm also going to try the Body for Life eating plan more or less this month, I think it's time for a shake up in that department as well. Still need to get the book, but I've got enough info to get started today.

I can't wait to know all of you, and to watch our team KICK SOME BOOTY!!!

If nobody wants to be the captain, I'd be happy to step into that role, I love spreadsheets!

Also suggest we all make each other 'friends' on our blogs to make it easy to inspire each other and see how we're doing!

HAPPY TRAILS to all of you

Annabanana

p.s. TexasMPGirl, you are amazing and inspirational to me already. I think if I was in the sandbox I would want to sit and play slingo online during my off time, but running really is a better thing, and I bet helps with the stress of being so far from home. You are going to LOVE the Austin marathon, it's the perfect time of year to do one!

Greetings all! My name is Ken. My running goal for the month is 60 miles. I've got my last tri (and my first Olympic) for the year coming up in less than two weeks now. I'm drawing a blank about what we were supposed to write so I'll make something up.

I too saw only wing-dings font in the challenge team assignment thread. I just started reading all of the individual teams to find my name. Luckily, our team was the second one.

Let's see, what else...

40 yr old male, married, father of 4 - 18 year old son (in college), 7 year old son, 5 (6 tomorrow) year old daughter and 5 (just turned 5) year old daughter. We live in McKinney, TX which is just north of Dallas.

I'm shooting for my first marathon this off season (Dallas White Rock in December).

Good luck to all. Let's stay injury free and kick some butt.

P.S. Put me down for 4.2 miles completed this morning. Or do we just report once a week?

BRITTANY!!!

Hi folks, I'm Janice.  I just finished my third tri season.  Moved up to Olympic distance this year and I'm proud to say that my last one, Escape to Miami last weekend, I raced as an "A" race.

Learned a lot this year, mostly that I need to get faster.    I'm lucky in that with the season over, I'm still excited to keep up with my training.  And, in that I have super cool training partner with the same goals.

Right now, I want to at least meet my run totals for 2006.  100 miles between now and December 31st to complete that number.  30 miles isn't that ambitious ... but, I need to focus on form and speed, and then distance.  Plus, challenges tend to freak me out and I don't want to be the dead weight.  Haha ... dead weight.  Get it?

Okay ... I'm single, looking to get back into the job market, and in the meantime launching my own business.  www.triprincess.com should be functional by the middle of the month.    I do have the time to be team captain, but only in Anna or someone else doesn't want the role.  I'm trying to learn PHP programming, and my new Blackberry ... . ;p

Good luck everybody!  Let's bury them!  Bury ... get it?  I'd say I'd keep my day job, but I don't really have one.  But, I will be here all week!

Hey all - let's brew up some winning potions and kick some creepy butts!

This was my second year of tris - sprint distance. I've also been doing aquathons the last 2 years. I injured my IT band last fall and it took until March for the PT's and docs to figure out it wasn't the issue, and that an unstable pelvis was the problem. Now that I know how to pop it back into place, I'm trying to build up my running mileage again, and I'm signed up to do a 1/2 mary in January. So, my goal is 50 miles for the month.

I also looooooove Halloween. So, I'll try to come up with some good inspirational black magic pictures and such to motivate us all!

Hey Janice!

I am SO jealous that you got to do the Escape to Miami - that was MY first Oly last year, but the timing wasn't right for me this year. I will be back next year for sure. It was so much fun, even tho' it was HARD!

Deanna - yay on Halloween fun! I am so excited for the challenge, didn't realize how much I needed one! (I am secretly totally competitive but within myself)

Hello team Black Magic! Let's kick some tushy!

I recently relocated to Richmond, VA from Boston, MA. I am currently between jobs (wife found job here first, I had to stay home to continue working and sell the house, which I did). I am fantastically happily married and have 2 boys ages 2.5 and 4.5.

This was supposed to be my second complete tri season, but a severe ankle sprain in March (I WISH I had broken it) derailed my season - I couldn't run for 3 months, and couldn't swim for 2. My ankle still isn't right, but I can swim/bike/run pain free now. Throw in a moving process, and I didn't end up doing any tri's this year. Disappointing because I missed the inaugural Patriot HIM in MA which was my big race this year.

My goal is 50 miles and that is going to be a real challenge for me. Making 50 miles will be a real accomplishment, but that is what this is about, right? Challenging ourselves. So I set a goal that is reachable, but difficult.

LET'S ROCK!

Wow, I already know most of you through your logs or posts and one even in real life (HI JANICE!), and I have to say that this is a great BT team.  I think we're going to win, mostly based on the all-important determination quotient!  Some real tail-kickers in this crowd.

Okay, me:  moved from Houston to Philadelphia a few months ago & am training for my third half-marathon, November 18.  My October run goal is 55 miles.  It's AMBITIOUS:  about 3 miles more than my best month ever and almost double my average so far this year.  I'm glad to have my first-ever Challenge to get me there.  Go team.

Look for a LSD run to hit my log later today:  8.2 miles!

Howdy teammates!
Donto here, BTer since Feb 2004!  This is my gazzionth challenge (so it seems like!) and I'm coming off of a foot injury (Plantar Fasciitis).  I set a low goal of 20 miles because I have no idea how it'll respond after taking a month+ of running off, but the 1 mile test run last week seemed encouraging.  If things look good after 2 weeks I'll bump up my goal to challenge myself.  I used to love running home (~6 miles) from work 1-2x per week so I'm crossing my fingers!

I have a "C" race this Sunday (Oly), that I'm hoping to just survive, I'm so undertrained for it!

The FL (Space Coast) running season is kicking into high gear now and I want to go after some PR's this season while I get my base training ramped up for the spring tri's.

Best of luck everyone, be safe and train well!

Oh, if no one wants to be the "head Witch" I'll volunteer to do it.  I've been doing a lot of these so I'd like to 1st offer it to anyone else that would like to get their feet wet!

Anna!!!    and Celeste!!!  and D.Z.!!!    Donto ... did you do MiamiMan last year?  In the floppy hat!  If it was you at the run water station, after the turn around ... I saw you coming, but we were really understaffed ... .  Sorry I missed you!

Anna - E2M is MANDATORY next year.  I'm already planning the post-race cookout here at Fort Flamingo.  Hmmm.  Should probably go dress 'the kids' for Halloween.

Celeste!  (we got to party at Lonestar) This will be fun!  Hope you like your new home!

DZ!  (we got to party back in Massachusetts last Christmas).  Glad you're feeling better, and hope you like YOUR new home.  Are you still in a 'compartment?'

Folks, we're going to win.  But, let's keep our wands at the ready!

Hi folks,

I'm Mary from Washington. I'll do my first tri next summer. I've jogged in the past, but I'm out of practice and out of shape, so I'm starting the walk/run program. Tomorrow is day 1 for me. My goals overall are to run a 5k and get in shape. For the month, it's to stick to the walk/run schedule, get in all my workouts, and start doing strength training again.

Glad to be on the Black Magic team!

Hi everyone, Martin here. Sport mad.

Seems I'm the only Brit on the team so I'll have to take care what I say about you Yanks Live in a small village/town called Alsager in the county of Cheshire (can be found on Google maps if you are so inclined).

Married, two boys 13 & 10 (hard work). Coming up for the big Five - O next year (Brittany - that quote 'age wrinkles the body' is only true in certain areas & sometimes only when immersed in water). Better tell you now that I have a wicked sense of humour & can take the most innocent of comments the wrong way!

Used to work for one of the big Banks over here but took voluntary redundancy some four or five years ago. Not counting as I'm enjoying my 'retirement' too much. Fortunate enough not to have to work again, providing Stock Markets don't crash! So spend much of my time training.

Used to play Cricket (nice leisurely game that it appears you lot can't understand) for the local Bank side. Started running a couple of years before leaving work & have competed in the local 5 mile race for the last three years & also ran a 1/2 marathon last year. Borrowed my brother's hybrid bike for a bit of cross training, which led to the purchase of a racing bike. No idea that I would get the bug ( have always been interested in bike racing & followed the Tour De France for years - which incidentally is where I 'met' Catherine who has started this challenge). This led to me buying yet another (lighter) racing bike a short while later. You may be able to tell from my logs how much I get out on it.

Have a 55 mile, very hilly, ride to take part in this coming Sunday. Then my intention will be to focus on the 5 mile run in February. My riding partner & mentor is trying to kid me that with an eight week training schedule I have a 35 Min time in my legs. Some hope! Training starts after Sunday.

Have a running lady friend who competed in a fun tri last year & thought 'OK, maybe I could do that (although swimming doesn't interest me)'. Was going to enter one last month but it was a week after my 100 mile riding event. Had put all my training into the ride, so pulled out. Hadn't done any swim training anyway. Fancy my chances if I do it next year, as her husband entered & came 13th. Well I know I'm a tad quicker than him on the bike & my running is better, but swimming...........

Good luck to everyone. Don't worry about my slow start this week, barring any injury I should have no problem catching up.

Morning All, nice too meet more of you!  No doubts here that everyone will accomplish their goals...in fact, watch them ask us why we didn't pledge more, haha! Here's how I'm looking for the week:
M- 13.2 mi
T- 1.5 mi

10.5 planned for tomorrow so long as my running buddy doesn't bonk..actually with our route, he's stuck doing 10.5 anyhow, so that will get done, even if I have to drag him back to start point, hahaha, and then it'll just be waiting for the 10-Miler Race on Sunday.  I ran that in 87 minutes last year with a little bit of training (it was before this long distance thing bit me, actually it was the long distance thing that grabbed me)...and with the running I've done in the past year here, the cooler weather we're having now, hopefully a not too too heavy smog day, and I think I can best case scenario it at 8 min mile and worst case at 8:30 min mile...so we'll see.

Happy Tuesday to all (every day that passes for me right now is a Happy Day!) Oh, and welcome to Lobstergirl, our new teammate!

Just a few more bat lengths than you it seems. I've gone for 60 Miles. Sod the metric stuff, I'm still with you on that. Looks like if we add you, me & Donto together we get TexasMPGal 's mileage. She's going some. Thinking of playing some psychological mindgames on some of the other teams long distance runners. Threaten them with some 'BLACK MAGIC' voodoo so they get blisters on their feet.

I've added a couple of columns in our spreadsheet for real life name and location, if you've shared. Will post our results weekly!
