Going to fully test that anti-wussy theory? Take some ear plugs and enjoy the downwind portion of the ride!!!!

You are going to need glasses for sure. I suggest two disk wheels, and a single gear......

I had 25-30 mph winds.  10-12mph into the wind, 26-30 with the wind at my back..

Not 54 mph, but I had 25 mph and occasional unpredictable gusts to 39 mph using Hed 3's front and back.  I did OK, I can't imagine 54 mph.  That's impressive!!

It's not the headwind that bothers me, it's the gusts that hit me from the side.  I wouldn't even ride yesterday in 30mph gusts.  Hope you survived!

How do you move forward? I would probably blow over and fall on my face!

Awesome job if you survive it!

Well that was quite the ride, not gonna lie. I just did an out and back, averaging 10 mph going out. There were points were I was down to literally 7mph and thought I was going to tip over. When the road curved and I had a side wind I went on the other side of the road. Not so I could see oncoming traffic but so if I got blown too far to the side I would go into the ditch (which happened once) and not into oncoming traffic - which would probably end badly. I'm riding a Y-Foil so the frame acts like a fricken sail, and I couldn't be in the aero position with the side wind at all!

However coming back with a tail wind I hit 45 mph on a flat and I averaged 38. I simply couldn't pedal any faster! It was probably harder with the tail wind since I have to ride at such a high cadence.

And it was 23 degrees outside, forgot to mention that. My beanie actually got blown off once and I had to go back for it

Tabbing over to Weather.com would actually confirm his story roughly   54 gusts and 23 with windchill

Good on ya, ip4w!

I beleive it with the cold fronts rolling across the upper midwest. I just got back in from a 15 MPH constant and 50+ MPH gust ride and it was fun but hard ride, like a hill that never ended.

He's in SD -- I can totally believe 23 degrees and a 54 mph wind. WTG 400watts!

I thought I was doing good today riding my horse is 45 degrees with 25 mph winds! Of course his 'happy' bucking after each jump didn't help.

Sounds like similar weather to what I was used to growing up in MN and my son's year in college last year in Morris.

Great job getting out there!

I always find riding when the conditions are ridiculous is the most fun.

I used to commute to school in stuff like that in southern MI/northern IN.  Early in the season, I would crash and burn regularly.  Later, I got so I could lean into the side wind, slide sideways across the black ice, and move on.  But I cursed every moment of the way...

A headwind's a different story.   It is truly awful, but at least you can think (fantasize) about what the ride will be like on the way home...

Hope you made it OK.

HAHA no seriously! 42 gusting to 54 and it was 33 with a perceived of 23 degrees!

It's all flatland out here so we get pretty good with riding in the wind.

It's only too windy when it starts blowing the stickers off my down tube.

Agreed. People need to harden the frack up and get out there! If you enjoy the races that you're wearing 3 layers or it's down pouring or too windy to use a disk wheel you're at an advantage over the competition.

It's all about attitude, embrace the suck

you've also apparently never visited eastern South Dakota.   That is actually a fairly typical fall day.

I remember doing long runs in 20* weather with 20-30 mph winds and I was living on the west (non-windy) side of the state.

It wasn't nearly that bad here (Chicagoland area) yesterday, but we had some stronger winds too and made for an interesting ride.

Biggest mistake, riding with a tail wind going out.  But oh well.

At one point, I had just come from a stop light.  I was only going about 18-19mph.  Stopped pedaling to take a swig of water.  Put the bottle away, look down at the computer and I had popped up to 22mph.  Without peddaling.  At that point I knew it was going to be an interesting ride back home.

And it was.  On the trip back, it was a bit hillier.  I was going down one hill, thought I would coast a bit to save the legs for the next hill immediately following.  Couldn't.  I was actually slowing down going down a fairly steep hill.  Which made for the ride up the other side not very fun.

But.  It was a beautiful day other wise.  AND I was on a brand new route.  Will probably do it again.  Hopefully with less wind.
