Subject: Do your Siblings tri?
My brother decided after seeing me doing Cal70.3 this year, that he could do better than me. He has challenged me to race it again this year. I told him he was crazy. He has never done a tri, let alone a race of any kind. Well we did run a 100 yard dash about 10 years ago. Anyways, he was on the phone last night with me and was signing up for the race. I kept trying to talk him out of it. I don't think he has an idea of what he is in for. He has yet to start any kind of training. I have bought him a couple books on triathlon to try and give him an idea of what he has to do and how he has to train. There is a cool part we will be in the same age group so i know i won't be DFL

Does anyone else have a sibling tri rivalry?

I started doing triathlons (sprints) this year. My sister-in-law did her first about a month ago. Her husband, my brother, the jock, has now decided to do triathlons and his first will be a 70.3 next year. He'll do fine, though. It's easier to train when you're unemployed. ;-)

Not so much tri rivalry but tri training rivalry. Neither of us will say it but its hard to find us in the pool without the other, its very motivational to say the least. He beats me pretty bad swimming, he lays down about a 1:40 and i can 1:50 at best. But i definitely get him in biking and running. I am trying so hard to get him to want to do triathlons with me but he doesnt seem interested. Your bro will be fine just make sure he can do the swim, maybe invite him to do some training with you to motivate him when he sees how badly you beat him.

My brother and I could/would compete in absolutely anything you could think of. (I usually win of course) He started doing sprints about 4 years ago. My GF got me into running about a year and a half ago and after getting into a little better shape decided to try tri's this past summer. I've now done 3 sprints and I'm bugging my bro to race in a HIM next summer. Probably setting myself up to get crushed, but he was always the sprinter and I was better at distance so we'll see. I do have the eternal big brother intimidation factor going for me.

Sister, notarunr, is up this weekend doing a sprint.  We have been tracking 5K's but the activity is less this year.   In tri's I beat her time, she beats my placing in AG.

Um...yea...my older brother, WSM9363, was a much better athlete in HS.  He was usually top-5 on the XC team while I was usually the first reserve runner (top-7 run varsity).  After signing up for Steelhead in '06, I e-mailed him (and a lot of others) about what I was doing.  He e-mailed me back a couple weeks later and said that e-mail had pushed him "over the edge" towards signing up for a tri.  He'd wanted to do one (a sprint) and started running and swimming.  He did his first and we've raced head-to-head three times (a sprint, a 5-mile road race, and an OLY).

My "little" bro did his first sprint tri earlier this year in CO.  Didn't tell any of the rest of us what he was up to.  After the event he sent out his success story and pictures.  Up to that point, I had only done running events (mostly half marys).  Well...I couldn't be outdone, so I immediately started training.  Did my first one last week.  Now I'm hooked.  Hopefully we will do one together next year...good reason to get him here to TX...or me to CO...or both of us to an neutral site.

My younger bro is getting into it. We've raced together a few times. It's cool that he's involved with tris now, gives us something in common!

Here's a lazy arse repost of a response to 'why we tri'. Excuse the tone!

I am on the far left in this photo, my brother beside me in the green shirt. We both finished last in our age group at this sprint tri in New Brunswick last weekend. It was very emotional for me that we competed and finished this race as I have heart failure and cardiomyopathy and my brother has lupus, and often is quite ill. We both may die from these diseases. Despite these issues, we both trained hard and, i hope you agree, are both in good shape. He flew out from Vancouver to meet me and our third brother for this race. I have been doing these sprints for 4 years, and I get much slower each year. Before I was diagnosed I could do an Oly in 2:20. Now I do a sprint in 1:35. I know other quick guys must think I'm a wanker, and some FOP's seem to ignore me after they find out my time when I'm chatting with the guys I used to beat who are still friends. Its a funny ol' world. My brother and I are thrilled when we can get out there and race, and we train as much as we can within the limits our health allows. I don't think we should be questioning other peoples motivations, and we all deserve equal respect whether we race slow or fast, long or short. The only people who don't deserve our respect our those who don't respect others.

Wallace and I  and my best friend have agreed to do this again next year with my third brother joining to cheer us on. We're thinking Timberman  or something in Maine. Assuming our health again is still good, we're planning  on actually beating people next year. That  may require some subterfuge during T1. Perhaps a quick deflating of a few tyres might help.

One of my younger brothers and one of my cousins got me involved and I did my first sprint last week. I wasn't sure what to think when I began training, but now I realize that I like the variety because I don't get bored and I like that I can work to improve in more than one area...he isn't going to get me to run a marathon though.

My brother started doing tris after watching/hearing about my adventures.

It hasn't really been positive for me. I remember when I told my parents I has signed up for my first IM, their response was Tom was so surprised he went sub 3 hours in the Olympic distance race. They will go to his races, but not my Ironman races.

His first Oly this year he didn't swim once since last September's tri and rode his bike 6-8x wears basketball shorts. He has been a 20+ year runner year round in Minnesota 25 mpw. He is a gifted athlete and we don't share same birthparents so he does better than I do without working or training really. He makes fun of me and my dilegnce to training, the tri stuff I have, that I have a coach.

I do always beat him on the bike and I get some satisifaction. He runs his miles in the 6s or low 7s in his races and often places in top 10-15% of swim without any training.

We may do a 10 hour tri together next year where we alternate doing a sprint then the other does one for total of 10 hours. I'm wondering if it may be a positive experience.

I did a mini-sprint with my little brother a long time ago.  3mile run - 6 mile bike - 400 meter swim, in that order.  I was 24 and he was 11.  Man, I beat him bad!

No! I wish he would. I've tried to get him involved, but he has no interest. He's more into partying and stuff like that, but he should get more active because he can stand to lose a few pounds. He also lives in a town that hosts an Ironman! If that's not motivation, I don't know what is. Oh well. Maybe one day.....

My youngest brother started doing tris this year, while I started last year.  Always the faster swimmer, his first sprint tri was faster than any of my sprint tris.  I think he came in sixth in the swim with no training whatsoever, but went out too hard and didn't have much left for the bike and run...still faster than me though.  Our other brother (middle) will probably start next year as he's extremely competitive with the youngest.  He'll probably beat me too.  No races together yet as I'm in Colorado and they're in Virginia, but maybe we'll get something in the works where we all travel somewhere to race.  Looking forward to it.

It was my older sister and a cousin that coerced me to do my first tri.  I suffered on the run and didn't have a whole lot of fun, but a year later gave tris another shot.  Now, my sister trains when she feels like it to do the occasional sprint and I just completed my first IM.  I can now kick her butt any day of the week.  :-)

Hello

My brother & I do these together and this website keeps us in contact.

This weekend I was hurt but still went to the Vidalia, GA tri to cheer on my brother. We were going to race  together.

I think both my brothers have tried triathlons, but aren't interested in sticking with it, but that's OK as one brother is a biker who sometimes runs and the other is a runner who rarely bikes. I compare training notes with each and when I see them we run and bike together, it's kind of nice that we each have something in common but still have our "own" thing.

My brother and I are doing our first event together next year. He's the better runner I'm the better swimmer and we're similar on the bike.

He bet me £10 that he would beat me by more than 10 minutes. I finish pool sprints (400m/20K/5K) in 1:12 so he will need to be in about the top 20 overall finishers to beat me by 10 minutes...I reckon my £10 is safe!

My sister who is 10 years younger than me also does triathlons.  We did our first Ironman together in 2007.  I have now done 2 and she has just signed up for her 4th, but I am pregnant so can't do it with her.

My brother has no interest in it - just as well, because he would beat our butts!!  He says he does not run and is not a runner but does a 1h30 1/2 marathon (just for fun).  He is also a very good swimmer.  I would hate to know what he could do I triathlon in if he felt like doing one.  His sport is windsurfing.

The only way I can see my siblings doing this is when they come up with a way to smoke a cig during the swim.

Nothing else to say but Wow, incredible.  Not sure I would have the mental fortitude to continue to compete.

Two of my brothers and I competed in our first event this year.  I was the only one to finish because of a fatality on the course.  Race was cancelled shortly after I crossed.  However, one brother and I did both finish another event a few weeks ago and it was lots of fun.  He is much faster than me on the run and bike but I am hoping to make up some ground this winter.  Probably never catch him but that does not mean I won't keep trying.
