Subject: Accupuncture?

Hi all...

I am wondering if anyone has any info/insight into accupunture?  I am wondering if this could help my stomach injury?  I have been to so many therapists, and those who know and have read past race reports know my absolute and total frustration with this...I have done everything that has been asked of me to try to get this stomach pain from flaring up on the run, and out of 4 tri's this year, it's only "stayed away" once...

I am at the end of my rope so they say...I just don't know what else to do.

Going to call the sports medicine specialist at UIC where I went last year, as he is very familiar with running injuries and see if there isn't something else we can try, I just don't know what else to do....I've cried enough tears, and need to try to "fix this" on the off season (which starts after next Sunday after the Accenture sprint).

Thanks all!  Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Amy

Amy,

Not sure what your stomach injury was.

I can only speak from my own experience so here is my .02 not involving acupuncture.

I have experienced stomach pain over the years. However, the pain was not consistent. It was not until last year that I was able to resolve the problem completely. This is the info I was given by clinical staff since many moons ago:

...Slow down and take deep breaths due to lack of oxygen in that cramped/pain area

...massage area

...try using a carbo drink instead of food the evening prior to or hours before a workout/event

...experiment with protein and fat intake prior to workout/event. I was told that too high of a content of one/both may cause issues

...proper pre-race/exercise hydration.

...hydration....isotonic and hypotonic drinks. If Hypertonic is used it should be in conjunction with an isotonic beverage

What finally  resolved the problem .....A Gluten Test. Found out I was allergic to it especially in moderate to large dosages. A two 12 inch Subway Sandwichs would destroy me in about 40 minutes; yet, a 6 inch would not be as bad. So, for me I had to minimize gluten. It worked. Moreover, I also followed the hydration and eating principals for years, which helped.

Not sure if any of this will help...

Best of Luck

David

I've been seeing an acupuncturist for a couple of years now.  They certainly can work miracles when it comes to strange illnesses no one else can diagnose.

Be open to it being something weird causing it though.  After thousands of dollars of tests and different drugs, etc....my stomach problems were all stress/depression related....

I would certainly give it a try.  Take some time to ask around and find a good practitioner in your area.  My wife uses it weekly as part of her therapy and it MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE.  I used it around cancer surgery and it helped.  Worst case, you drop a few bucks.  Be sure to have the stress reduction treatment as part of it... that may help as well.  Good luck, EK
