OK, I prepaired for 8 weeks to do my frist sprint.  I thought I was ready but the event was cancelled due to weather.  I do want to do a sprint in the spring.  I also realize the important od training in the winter.  What is a good off season training plan for a beginner?

Here is what I am currently doing. Weight training 2x per week (this is a must for me due to my line of work)...  I also try to swim run and bike 1x each week....  Is this enought???  I know I will have to do the 8 week program in the spring but want to keep myself in shape...

Personally, I don't really take an off season. I continue to train throughout the winter. The biggest difference between the main season, and the off season is that if I miss a day during the "off season" I will not beat myself up for it. Now, if I miss that same day during the season, there is no end to the punishment.

Granted, I am no coach, but I would say if you can do 2x per discipline that would be the best maintenance schedule. Of course, some workouts will have to be on the trainer/dreadmill, etc. because of the shorten days, but that has worked for me.

I still try to get in 3x per discipline during the winter months. Most of my bike is done on the trainer, runs are outside, and swims are at the gym.

Supposedly once a week will keep you from losing fitness, but you won't gain either. If you have modest goals and will ramp up in the spring, you'll be fine.

Hey - great question!

How much you train depends on your goals. If you are serious about your results you should be training 3x per week, per sport. And you should be lifting 2-3x per week as well.

There are plenty of great off-season training programs on this website - for athletes with swim, bike or run as limiters. There are also balanced programs that are based on how many hours you have to work out each week. Check out the BT Training programs, you won't be disappointed!

Good luck!
