Subject: Training for an ocean swim in a pool
I am signed up to do the Sandman Triathlon in VA Beach in September, a race which I did two years ago. The last time I did it, I had virtually no experience swimming in the ocean, and with a small craft advisory in effect on the day of the race, the swim portion was nearly the end of me (or at least that's how I felt! Thankfully I was wearing a full wet suit.)

Despite the enormous challenge I faced that day on the swim part, I was not deterred and am looking forward to the race again this year. But I want to be better prepared for the swim portion. I don't live near the ocean, and while I hope to get a little practice in during a vacation at the beach, I will almost exclusively be training in a pool.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to better prepare for an ocean swim when one doesn't live near an ocean? The swim portion is 1K.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

hopefully next time you'll get some better conditions!

what i do in the pool is just swim some fast 500's so i'm pretty tired and practice sighting so i'll be better at sighting when im fatigued.. theres no way your gonna get the same feeling as being in surf and having to sight but thats just what i do.  i also just try to swim long distances at a time, treating it as a race situation

good luck!

No real ideas on how to train for ocean conditions in the pool.  I mean, it's calm, has a black lane line, the water isn't salty, and there's no jellyfish.  So really, just get in the pool and build yourself into an overall better swimmer, then get in some practice when you get there.  You could also find a lake to get some open water in.  That'll at least be swimming without a lane line and will let you work on sighting.

Is there any open water around you? I would think that even a non-salt water lake or river would provide some conditions more like the ocean than the pool - like a current and not being able to see bottom ...
