Subject: first bike ride
since i havent yet bought a road bike to train on, for the time being, i am riding with a mountain bike. For my first ride today, i did one hour at 15 mph. I didnt want to go to hard, because i had a slight run this mornin, and tommorrow is my longer run right before my SAT classes...BOOOOOOO.

Is it a wise choice to be riding a mountain bike instead of a road bike for the time being? I only ask, because id hate to find out that the training i put in on the bike would not carry over to the road bike usage. Thanks so much

I trained and raced my first season on the old mtn.bike that I had. I've since gotten a nice road bike but it will be quite a while before a tri bike is an option. Use what you have to start with.

Edit: to answer your question, yes the training will carry over to a road bike. They're not exactly the same but close enough.

You might want to pick up some street tires for the mtn.bike though. They don't cost a lot, and they make road riding a lot easier and a bit faster too. If you have clipless pedals already, that's great. If not, you can do without but I just put a set of inexpensive plastic cages (toe clips) on my flat pedals to get started. Good luck!

I spent many hours on my stupid mountain bike before I bought my tri-bike. Stick to it. Free is the cheapest bike you can have; build up some base miles on it.
