Overall Rank = 487/1700
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 109/164
Pre-race routine:

For Breakfast, I had a Slimfast shake, peanutbutter and jelly sandwich, and a blueberry bagel. I ate too light on my last race, and I paid for it with cramps. This was right on.
Event warmup:

Nice light jog, with plenty of walking back and forth between the transition and the port-a-jon to rid the excess water.
Swim
  • 33m 15s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 13s / 100 meters
Comments:

This was by far the worst swim EVER for me. The water was so cloudy, that it was claustrophobic at the beginning. I was actually on the edge of quitting at the beginning. I totally forgot ALL stroke mechanics, and was just flailing around at first, and it totally wiped me out. I finally fell in to the groove, but was exhausted.

As an aside, I love fish, they are great on a platter, steamed with some lemon juice and butter sprinkled on top. But not fish water. I can still smell fish as I write this. That was the most foul tasting water that I have come across in a while.
What would you do differently?:

Practice in a lake, where visibility is very limited. And then practice some more.
Transition 1
  • 04m 6s
Comments:

Note to self: unzip calf zippers before trying to get the suit off of your legs. I had to pull the suit back up to get to the zippers before I could get it off. After getting the suit off everything went very smooth.

One thing I did which really helped, was I brought a bucket. Took a 5 gallon bucket and cut off everything but the bottom 5 inches. I used that to was my feet off before I put on my shoes. It got rid of all the fine pebbles that I picked up in the transition area.
What would you do differently?:

Bike
  • 1h 09m 59s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 21.31 mile/hr
Comments:

Threw my chain just before the end. It was my fault, I was in the big chiain ring and was shifting up and basically twisted the chain off of the chain ring. Aside from that, I had a great ride.
What would you do differently?:

Do some more riding to get my overall speed up. I know that will come in time with just riding.
Transition 2
  • 02m 36s
Comments:

There was a turn and a short downhill ride to the dismount line. You cannot see the dismount point until you are just about on top of it. As it turned out, there was about 5 of us tied up at the dimount point. Someone was taking their sweet time getting past the timing line and it was causing a bottleneck. So there was no riding with feet on top of shoes, jumping off of bike, etc. It was more like a slide to a stop before taking out everyone in front of you stop.

There was also a long run around the transition area to th bike run exit. You basically had a 100 yard sprint just to get out of the transition area
What would you do differently?:

Nothing at all.
Run
  • 57h 21m
  • 6.21 miles
  • 9h 14m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

Nice run. Not much else to say about the run. Some of the neighbors had their sprinklers on for us so we could cool off.
What would you do differently?:

Hill work.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around for a good 20 minutes to cool down.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The swim. I need to repeat that to get in my thick skull, the swim.

Event comments:

Really fun race. My only complaint was that I wished they gave us some room at the finsh line to slow down from the run, before they were hounding us for the timing chips.

Aside from the swim, Frank it was still a great race....

I agree with the fishy smell and taste of the water.

It was great meeting you and your family and I look forward to seeing you at more races!

I know what you mean about fish smell - ugh! (... but laughed my rear off reading it).  Drafting off of the wrong guy can be painful ... sorry you had to also swim the extra distance in water you normally wouldn't want to put your face into.

Your bike time is pretty solid given the distance.  As I did about the same speed at St. Anthony's, I have the same lament  ... to which my friends tell, "Be patient, Grasshopper ... and get your lazy @#$%^ in the saddle."

Congrats on a good performance this early in the season.

Frank great job on the race and tell your wife and daughter that even though they were hounding us after the finish to get our chips I really respect people like them to sacrifice their day to volunteer. It was also great to meet you guys and I look forward racing with you again!!
