Subject: Bike Bottle Cages for Race Bottled Water
I did a 70.3 yesterday and got a littering penalty when my water bottle went flying while going through an intersection with bumpy pavement. The water bottles from the race aid station just did not fit in my bottle change tightly enough. To make things worse, the second bottle flipped sideways in the cage and all the liquid drained out and I had nothing to drink for ~50 minutes. Does anybody have suggestions for cages that will hold bottles that aren't really designed for them?

Where are your bottles at? On the frame or do you have a behind the seat system? I have a behind the seat one and while they never truly fit the gatoraid bottles they are pretty close. I have mine maybe at a 15 degree angle from totally vertical. Having them further is just asking for trouble and isn't really any more aero since your front profile is so large...plus stuff tends to fall out as I have learned as well :P

The bottle behind my seat popped out. The one on my down tube bounced and turned over. When I got new bottles at the next aid station, I put a gatorade bottle behind my seat and it was fine. I put a water bottle on the down tube and head it in place with my knees when i went over bumps.

Here's the ones I use:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00622ABXQ/ref=oh_aui_search_detai...

They are lighter than CF and they tend to last 1-2 years. I put my bike inside my car and it rests on the cages...so I'm sure that's why mine don't last too long. I haven't had any issues with these. I had a TON of issues with more expensive ones with them being too loose. These are plastic so don't expect bling status :p

During the race there will be plenty of opportunities to exchange bottles, so I'm thinking about going with the aero bottle and Gatorade bottle and fill up as necessary. What should I do?

When people think of hydration in the aero position, the first name that comes to mind is the Aerodrink from Profile Design. I was expecting a pretty quick and breezy review of this water bottle.

Rocket Science Sports has applied its hyper-technical approach to designing a water bottle. The result is a water bottle with dimples similar to those on a golf ball.
