Pre-race routine:

Packet Pickup on Friday

I got up early (4:30) on Saturday morning to walk Zoe and load up my gear. I ate a bagel with peanut butter and had a banana. I was out the door at 5:15 or so and arrived at the race site, USA Baseball, before 5:45, including a stop at Starbucks just after they opened. The transition area opened at 5:30 (and closed at 6:45).

The last two years, this race was the USAT Long Course Du Nationals. This year that event moves to Miami and the event in Cary is quite a bit smaller.

Since I have a race coming up in two weeks, I am signed up for the Short Course this time around.

It as 54 degrees at the start but rapidly warmed to the 70s.
Event warmup:

Set up transition. Short, very run. dynamic warm up, leg swings.

It as 52 degrees at the start but rapidly warmed to the 70s.
Run
  • 21m 18s
  • 2.5 miles
  • 08m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

The first run went well and I got settled in.

Race started late and in kind of a stupid way. I was running the short course. The long course athletes did the run course 2x, they started short course athletes 15 minutes after long course athletes, as the front runners from the long course race were running toward the turn around which was also the start of the short course race. Then they decided to start the short course men an women separately and the women found out when they started and had to return to the start line. This should have been announced during the pre race meeting.

Comments:

I've done the long course even before but never the short course one here. I really enjoyed the short course bike route!
Transition 2
  • 01m 15s
Run
  • 22m 42s
  • 2.5 miles
  • 09m 05s  min/mile
Comments:

The second run went well, better than expected. I didn't really hold back on the bike and I wasn't sure how the second run would go.

Event comments:

This year’s event was good. I enjoyed the run in Brooks Park course.

Great job, Janyne!!  You survived the clusterbumble at the first run start and went on to win your AG, how awesome!  Very nice pictures, too.
