400 | Subject: RE: Rev3 Knoxville Roll Call This will be my first attempt at half distance. Any advice is appreciated, especially in regards to this specific race. I've read past race reviews. Obviously, I'm expecting lots of hills and some technical descents. I hope to be able to drive the bike course pre-race but since I'm probably bringing the whole family, I may not have that option as I doubt they want to spend extra time in the car. Also, for the Saturday practice swim, I assume you just show up during that time window and swim whatever you want? How strict is the ending time on the schedule for the practice swim? I'll be pushing it to get everyone ready to leave Saturday morning, get through packet pickup and to the swim area on time. |

I wouldn't stress about pre-riding the course. Expect some real hills. And pace them accordingly. The route has changed since I did it a few years back. I remember the hill being the real deal. Slow down and climb it within your capabilities. The last thing you want to do is blow up in the first 15 miles. Take the descents careful.

I'll be pushing it to get everyone ready to leave Saturday morning, get through packet pickup and to the swim area on time. Given that it is a river, they might be a bit strict. However, you can likely still get in the water for a few minutes throughout the day. I doubt they can police it all day. Given that this is your first attempt at the distance, go out and have fun with it. Remember, this isn't a PR course. Dont' try to squeeze out every second. If you got 6:03 or 6:05 it probably won't make a difference in how you feel. But pacing it correctly and having a well executed race will be the difference between having fun and being miserable. 1. Pace the bike conservatively |

New user 14 Franklin, TN | Subject: RE: Rev3 Knoxville Roll Call I'm in for the Olympic. Brining a few guys from the new Racebuzz Endurance team. We are all doing the Olympic. We drove over to Knoxville and biked the course last weekend. They might have to make a slight change in the course since the road was closed (detoured) for a half mile (at the end of the loop right before you head back down the hill into town).Did the half 2 years ago and the bike course was humbling. Like Andrew said, pace it smart at your ability or else you'll have no legs left for the run. |

400 | Subject: RE: Rev3 Knoxville Roll Call In the Athlete Guide that Rev3 emailed, it mentions a staging area for shoes for the swim exit due to a 0.3 mile run from swim exit to T1. I guess it's personal preference but those that have raced before, is this necessary? What is the run surface like - all concrete? I raced the Fall Creek Falls Oly last year and it has a similar distance from swim exit to T1 (0.33 per my garmin). It seemed most people at that race took advantage of the shoe drop but you also had to run across dirt and grass at FCF. Just want to know what to expect come race day. |

Veteran 437 Pittsburgh, PA | Subject: RE: Rev3 Knoxville Roll Call I was also wondering about the shoe drop. Do you drop your running shoes or a spare pair? I wouldn't want to drop my running pair there and they get misplaced / lost / taken by someone else. |

The hills are nothing killer in terms of grade, but they tend to be on the long side when climbing (at least that is the way they felt to me). Saw many a person with a road bike and clip-on aero bars last year. WOrk the hills and recover on the downhills.. Also, the back half of the run is long rolling hills, with last year's heat it was brutal. Hydration is key, also they were using the water bags last year. Which I thought were a pain to start but were a life saver as you could carry them much longer than a cup. I used one to drink and one to cool myself with.. Great race, enjoy it!
Good luck, I enjoyed that race and wish I was doing it again.. but with IMTX 2 weeks later.. probably not a smart idea. |

Member 37 | Subject: RE: Rev3 Knoxville Roll Call Not sure if this bike course change is noted in instructions - this post was on Rocky Top Multisports yesterday - The rev 3 bike course will have a slight change. Due to the construction on nuebert springs rd, the bike course will follow the detour. The out and back section on Tipton station, past nuebert springs rd, will be taken out. Meaning you will turn left on to nuebert springs road from Tipton station. |

New user 14 Franklin, TN | Subject: RE: Rev3 Knoxville Roll Call This doesn't make sense to me. The detour adds less than a mile. Why would the 4 mile-ish out and back section on Tipton Station Rd be taken out entirely? |

New user 10 | Subject: RE: Rev3 Knoxville Roll Call HI Everyone, I look forward to seeing you all next weekend. This is how rumors spread YES, there is a detour. The course (olympic and half bike) will follow the same detour as set up for the cars. It adds 1.6 miles to the course that we will take off the out/back, however the entire out/back is NOT taken out. The turnaround point will now be at W Dick Ford Lane (on Tipton Station Rd). It will be very minor and you will hardly notice. As for the shoe drop.....we had a new transition area last year (covered parking garage) which made the run to T1 fairly long and we received feedback that it would have been nice to have shoes. Are they needed? Absolutely not. Its optional. You will run on pavement and grass and we will sweep the area to make it as clean as possible. Its about .3 miles. We are using the same transition area. The run courses are the same. If you are in town on Friday night, come check out the 5k Glow run, a new Rev3 event in 2013 at all of our venues. This one will be big since we are using it to raise money for victims of the Boston Marathon bombings and close to my heart since I was there and had just crossed the finish line. We are expecting close to 1,000 people just for the 5k. Its a fun event which you can even walk. There is a 1 mile version too. Good luck and rest up. See you next weekend. Eric Rev3 Race Director |

Champion 7136 Knoxville area | Subject: RE: Rev3 Knoxville Roll Call Supposedly showers are on/off this weekend. That can change pretty quick in TN though. It usually ends up at least showering race day (historically speaking)
Sadly I'm out. After having to pull out of my last race I don't feel like I've had enough time to get healthy enough to race. Have fun guys, I'll be around watching. |
