I'm trying to squeeze in one more tri this year (marathon training has stolen most of my priority as of late). A friend suggested Reeds Lake in Grand Rapids . He said it's a hilly course that feels more like an Olympic distance even though the exact distances are 1/2 mile swim, 17.2 mile bike, 4.9 mile swim. Anyone else know anything about this tri?

I've done it three times and have enjoyed each one. Reeds Lake seems to always be warm although they haven't ever disallowed wetsuits that I know of.

The course is hilly but the only hill that really sticks out is on the way back on Fulton/M21 (out and back course), it's a long hill that just keeps going and going. It's one hill that may put you in your small chain ring depending on how aggressive and strong you feel when you're to it.

The run is around Reeds Lake and collins park where they have transition and the post-race festivities is a nice little park.

I'd say if you can fit it in, do it, they usually reach race capacity each year and a lot of the numbers are repeat racers.

I've done this race and quite frankly.... can't recall much about it.

That is likely a good sign since, if there were something ghastly about it, it would have stuck out even in the fading memory of an old fellow like me.

I can tell you this event is a classic and has been around for quite some time. What vague recollection I have of it is fond....

-Sorry I couldn't do better.

As a matter of fact this year is the 25th running of the race...

Eh gad... That makes it one of the longest running events in the U.S.

I seem to confuse this event with Emmanuel Millett's Three Rivers Triathlon... Perhaps because they are close to one anothr on the calender.

I know several people who have gone on to IM distance events that did Reeds Lake for their first tri.

It was my 2nd event ever but I try and do it every year as a close out to my season.

Thanks, guys!

I think I'll probably register soon, as the cost goes up in a few days (and I don't want it to fill before I get on-board). The hills sound a little scary for me, but I think I should be able to find a few little inclines to train on in the Lansing area!

There is the one hill on the bike on the way back into EGR and it really isn't all that bad --it will get the heart pumping, but it doesn't exhaust you for the run that's for sure.

The swim in the lake is more of the event --lots of people, not a lot of visibility in the water, and generally warm. I concur with the prior comment that I cannot remember a year where wetsuits were NOT permitted.

Go for it!

I will be doing it for my third time (it was my second tri in my inaugural year).

We had a customer today suggest that there were nearly 1000 people registered for this event. Is that true?

I believe it caps out around 1,200 or so.

Amanda-

There are a few rollers in the Laingsburg area and there are definitely some at the Kensington metropark. Let me know if you want to go out there.

Yeah --1200 is the max. I think they are usually right up around 1000.

Not too many years ago the max for participants was 800. I believe even 600 as recent as five years ago.

It's a well run event with plenty of volunteers and a well marked course.

However as grlawguy said, the water isn't clear at all so visibility is essentially to the length of your arm at best.

I'm signed up for it, but this is my first time doing it. Have talked to a bunch of people that have done it in the past years and the only bad remark is about the start. The start in the water is tight and there are a lot of racers. People get beat-up, dunked and swam over. Other then that I have done the course a few times and I like it. Enjoy the hill on the bike going out because it will make you pay up on the way back.

They do wave starts so unless you start your wave on the inside lane hugging the buoys you shouldn't get swam over bad. Even the fast swimmers in heats behind you will have ample room to swim since by the time they catch you the number of swimmers will have thinned out so they probably won't swim over others.

I tend to go middle of the pack and don't have too much trouble. I did however learn to wear my goggles UNDER my swim cap as a result of getting hit in the head in tight swim conditions..

Banging and hitting in the swim does not bother me. I'm an ex motocrosser, I'm used to playing rough.

I have been starting mid to front but on the side away from the buoys, the only problem I have had is people getting in my way. My last race I ended up elbowing some guy in the head on my recovery. I took a quick look back to make sure he was not going down (he did stop) then just got going again.

This will be my first year doing the race and from watching and training on those roads it seems like a pretty good course. Not exceptionally hard.

Guess I better get signing up for this quickly.

I rode the Fulton/M21 portion of the course last night and I cranked up the one big hill which felt good. It is a good fast course and on the way out speeds of 35+mph are common.

Have never done the race, but have heard great things about it. I am thinking about doing this race or Pontiac Lake the next day. Who knows, maybe I'll do both!

I am definitely interested.

SO...definitely going to this race! My friend Amy just got married recently and relocated to the Grand Rapids area. Driving up the night before and staying with her. Should be fun. I haven't seen her in a really long time!

Since you're doing Reeds Lake, now the question is will you do the Sunday race too? And will you be able to sprint both or will Sunday be a game-time decision?

My old man stopped by last night and said that he was out at Gazelle's yeasterday and they were telling him that they still don't have a route for this race. The roads that they have always rode/run are all under construction.

I forgot all about that, ran out there a week ago and they were a mess. This should be interesting.
