Subject: Under Armour colder runs

So I am new to this running outside in the colder weather.  I was at Cabela's last weekend looking at the UA colder weather gear.  I have to admit I am a bit unsure what I want or need.  I went though my closet and all my stuff is cotton sweat pants, which I know is bad.

So I live in Michigan, I don't want to buy a bunch of different outfits, plus ths cost involved.  My top concern is keeping my legs warm and dry.  This is when the confusion starts, do I need some cold gear compression to wear under aforementioned sweat pants?  Do I want some UA Metal or the UA cold weather leggings?  At the cost I really can't buy one of each.

Or am I just caving to market hype and should look at another brand that serves the purpose for a smaller price?

Joe

I think that the UA gear is great but it is also really expensive you should try looking around at other stores for generic brands. I found some long sleeve shirts made from the same fabric as the UA at Walmart for 1/4 the price and so far they have worked just as good. So I would say look around first.

i have some Champion (i think) warmup style pants (think the material that makes noise as it rubs together, like basketball warmups all most), that are liner with a thin layer that i used to run in the winter in idaho.  i'd wear them from about 35 degrees down the coldest i ran, which was 7 degrees. for a top, i have a nike long sleeve dri-fit style shirt that i got at Ross (similar to TJ maxx) for like $12, and its awesome.  for below 35 or so, i have a north face momentum jacket that is great!

I use a UA heatgear shirt as the base layer, then layer up from there depending on how cold it is. I do not use any compression leggings (I do use the UA compression shorts), but wear a somewhat loose fitting tight (Mizuno). Straight tights are ok for winter races, but I don't like them for typical training runs. I am looking into a pair or CWX tights however. You will be surprised how warm a simple pair of tights will keep your legs. On one really cold morning (10 F), I used tights under another pair of lightweight pants. This combo turned out to be too much, and I actually wanted to take off the outer pants. Keep a log on the temp, wind speed, rain, etc., and what you wore, and how it worked. I will check the weather, then check my log to see what I previously wore under those conditions. Expect to be cold for the first 5 to 10 minutes of the run, until your body heats up. If you are doing a long run, take an extra head band with you to change during the run. Don't get to hung up on the expensive outer gear, but do get the UA for the base layers.

I bought a Underarmor long sleeve undershirt kinda thing.. I don't think I've ever ran in that thing and not been hot. That's including some pretty cold Colorado runs.

I am in the same boat- need some warmth for little coin. Like mentioned above, check the big retailers. I found a tight long sleeve for $7 a Meijer today which was exactly what I needed. As for bottoms, I can't seem to find any thermal running tights for less than the $50 range. (Im young and cheap alright)

In the dead of winter, I'll run with the long sleeve UA cold gear top (tight fitting with the soft liner part like arm warmers have) and then a separate jacket over top (I have numerous to choose from depending on how cold).

I'll also use the same style cold gear pants down to about 30-ish, then I'll break out my thicker Brooks winter pants.

I was running in around 5 degrees or so at the coldest last winter (that was simply as cold as it got last year, not because I wussed out and didn't run in colder).

I plan on training outside, at least until the end of the year.  I have a nice UA long-sleeve shirt that I bought 7 years ago, but I needed something for my legs.  I didn't want to drop $70 for a UA pair.

I had read on the BT forums that Target's Champion is comparable, so I bought a pair of leggings there yesterday for $26 bucks.  These are neat because they've got:

  • zippers at the bottom to slip into more easily.
  • a tight band at the bottom of the legs to help seal out the elements.
  • a zipper at the top-back of the waist for keys, cash, etc.
  • a little reflective material on the outside of the legs.

Now, I haven't field-tested them yet, so I can't attest to the warm factor, but that'll give you an idea of what Target has.

I have a pair of UA tights I got on discount somewhere, and they are my go to cold weather layer. I do not usually go for brands, but bought them for the discount, and was pleasantly surprised. You could probably find something comparable in a discount brand (I love the C9 line at Target for regular running duds) but I'll toss in a vote for one pair of UA tights. I have worn mine on -11 degree runs at 5 in the am in the dead of winter and my legs have felt great...the rest of me, not so much!

In my opinion, you don't need to have overkill for sport specific clothing, and you can always wear a good pair of insulating tights for other purposes, whether it be over bike shorts on a brisk spring day, as a baselayer for skiing, etc.

In addition to UA, try Nike Pro. Just as good, usually a tad cheaper, and supposedly a better fit for those who are long of limb such as myself.

Go to Target.  I get most of my training clothing there.  They have Champion which is just about like the UA stuff and works just as well.

IMO UA is a marketing gimmick.  It is good but over priced for what you get (I think some of the ski lines are better).  If you want UA for cheap, go to TJMax or Marshals and you will find UA on the clearance rack.  It won't be the coolest looking stuff, but then again, you're going running in 20 degree weather so no one will be out there to admire your attire.

Was at Walmart this morning and bought one of the shirts you're talking about to try it out. Wore it on my run today and it felt great. Going to go back and get a few more since only $12 or so.

I love under armour stuff and find it is better/different than other brands. I also like the CWX tights they have both tights and winter tights that I have both but they are $90+ each.   The more expensive stuff tends to wick better I have found. The tough part of winter is you have wind and cold and you are also sweating. I have a few different UA tops that I wear as base layers in winter with other stuff on top.

I do like my long sleeve bike jerseys and will wear them to run in at times.

I live near an UA outlet and sometimes get great values.

I also have a Addidas and New Balance outlet near me.

What I tend to do is in my blog include what I wear and the weather conditions (temp, real feel, wind, sun/shade) as it gets colder it is tough to remember what is the right amount of clothing to wear to run or ride in.

I have heard from reputable sources that the Walmart brand is actually the exact same thing as Under Armor. Walmart basically buys the shirts from UA and has them forgo the label. It is the way Walmart does almost everything. They are so big they can push companies into selling their products for peanuts.

I like the UA stuff, but somehow we managed to run in the cold before it existed.  It isn't essential.  I've done plenty of runs in makeshift cold weather gear and lived to tell about it, and so have others who are much better runners than I.  (Now I live where it is never seriously cold.  I guess that's always an option too!)

Just get what you can afford -- even if that's sweatpants and a sweatshirt -- and go run.  A run in crappy gear outdoors beats a run in running shorts and technical top on a treadmill any day (IMO, except during a blizzard, or around here, a hurricane).

I have had an UA cold weather thermal top for almost 7 years now. It kept me warm and not overheated for 4 years of late fall/early spring crew/rowing (temps. so cold that we had ice layered on the boat, the oars, and our clothes - still stayed warms and mostly dry thanks to a waterproof jacket). For running I a lightweight shirt similar to that one that wicks well, then a second layer and a light wind breaker on top. That keeps me warms down to around freezing.

How long are your runs? If you are going to be out an hour or less, go in the cotton you've got. You really don't need to worry about the "bad" properties of cotton, since you aren't going to be out all that long. Heck, depending on where you run (closeness to your house/warmth), I'd push that to two hours.

The synthetics are vitally important on looooooooong treks outside. For instance, if you are going to hike for eight hours, where you have the distinct possibility of something happening causing you to have to overnight unexpectedly, then you should ABSOLUTELY be in all synthetics. Going for a run around your neighborhood? Not so necessary. If you are doing a long run, or you are headed somewhere where getting out of the elements if things go south fast is not an option, then it becomes more important. Otherwise, use whatever you've got to layer up, make sure you can vent and strip as needed, and head out. Don't let your gear become an excuse, and don't let it drain your bank account!

I run in cotton stuff often enough.  Especially in the winter.  I've never had too tremendous an issue with it.  You don't need UA stuff.

I run in Michigan all winter long. All I wear (all the way down to the single temps) is UA cold gear top, and tights, a wicking shirt, UA jogging pants, Brooks windbreaker, UA beenie cap and gloves.
When the temps ar in the high teens or highr I'll skip the pants and jacket and just use the cold gear.
The stuff IS worth the money.

This is not true. I am not here to tell you what to wear, but they are completely different products. My brother-in-law works for UA and they do not offer their products as knock off brands. The champion brand is comparable to the UA brand. It only gets cold enough around here to wear the tights on the bike in the dead of winter.

I also know this to be the case. And underarmour is made from AMERICAN MADE FABRIC.

And it is soooo worth the money. I've had my underarmour shirt and tights for 2 years and washed it daily in the winter and it's still held up. Had to get new pants this year only because the other ones are too big. You can find it on Ebay for cheaper and also at TJ Maxx and Marshalls.

Katybug34, what are you talking about? I wear my UA all the time in the winter here in SC!!!

Idon't know for sure but I would have to say I doubt this to be true.  I have an expensive UA shortsleeve shirt that is awesome.  I also have a few Walmart brand long sleeve compression shirts and although they are nice they are no where near as comfortable and the UA stuff.

I am cozy with a sleeveless UA heat gear, long sleeve cold gear over that and a REI shell jacket down to about 15 degrees.  I have a Nike shirt that is supposed to be for cold weatehr and the UA blows it away.  Run all winter with low temp about -10.  Sure, I throw another layer or two on under 15 and below zero, but love my cold gear top.  Have had it for three years now and still holds up and works like a charm.  Love it!

Rereading this and realizing its a legs issue, how cold you plan on running in?  I have some awesome bike pants the Mrs picked up for me that I run in until south of about 10 degrees and then throw some old windpants over those as well south of that so the boys dont freeze.  Slows ya down a bit but better than frostbite where ya dont want it.
