Anyway I can easily upload the routes from my Forerunner 301 to the new BT route tracking system, which uses GPX files?

I believe BT will support direct upload at some point.

Sporttracks is free and will import from Garmin directly and then export to gpx file. This file should be able to be imported in BT.

Motionbased may also allow to export to gpx file??

I'm not sure that falls under "easy", though.

I also tried this, but am getting an error "unable to open file for writing". I don't believe the route feature is supported yet, so I'm keeping my mouth shut.

I'm able to export a GPX from Motion Based, but unable to upload it to BT. Wondering if it's too big at 227kb, I get the same error screen as if I attempted to upload too big of a picture.

Also was hoping to bypass the MotionBased site, looking to BT for one-stop shopping.

I have not been able to get my GPX files to upload to BT yet either. I wasn't sure if that functionality had been enabled yet and just kinda waiting to see if there was going to be an official unveiling.

I tested it with files from a couple different sites. Can you post the file here and I'll take a look and see what needs to be done?

Marma, it's working now. I do have to click to "Continue" as the script stops, though. Eventually, it will go all the way through.

Thanks, this is way cool.

This was partly a configuration issue which has been corrected and for some files, like the one the bear is trying to upload, it looks like a coding issue. I'll try to get the coding part resolved later this evening (After my run. I missed too much training working on this lately. Sorry Green team).

Didn't get a chance to work on this last night. Hopefully sometime this evening (depending on how the kids go to bed and how much snow I have to shovel).

I just made a post in the thread above this one.  I previously used favoriterun.com.  I just exported and saved a gpx file to my computer and then uploaded and saved the route on BT.  See my post in the thread above if you want more specifics.  This will save me tons of time since I had 22 different routes saved on favoriterun.

bear, the file you sent me isn't valid. It's missing some required data at the end.

Can you try exporting it again? There isn't much we can do with an invalid route file.

I tried yesterday to upload from motionbased.....the file uploaded, but I was uploading cycling and it brought it in as a run. Tried it several different ways and didn't get any different results. Couldn't figure out how to get a gpx file directly from the garmin training center.

Once you import the file, click on the Bike icon and save the route.

'Sport' is something that's not defined in the standard, so every site and device manufacturer is going to have a different way of storing it.  In the few motionbased files I've seen there doesn't appear to be anything that defines the sport at all.

I've tried that at least 15 times with a couple different routes.....when the window first pops up it has the cycling highlghted....then when you press "go" to upload the file it goes back to the run icon highlighted. When the pop up window to save it comes up I highlight the bike again and it is still saving it under runs. Hopefully this makes sense

Motionbased has a section when you go to upload an activity where you choose what it is....in my motionbased account it says it is a cycling activity.

Should I do it through the Garmin training center? How do I save a gpx file from the garmin training center.

Here's a free program to do it offline.

http://www.easygps.com/download.asp

I have installed it and looks very promising though I havn't had time to run any data through it yet but it has support for garmin 301, 305 and tons of other gps's.

It will export as .gpx

oh yeah, great job on the mapping section.

BT Rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nice Job MarmaDaddy

I have tried several times to upload GPX files that I have export from MotionBased that were recorded on my Garmin 305. I get no error messages, pop-ups, or ex eption in my Java console just a blank map. Am I doing something wrong or is the import function only available at certain membership levels and I'm not getting a message stating that? I tried renaming my file but I still use dashes in the name.

Thanks
Tim

I'm having the same issue as Tim (the post above) when trying to upload a gpx from MotionBased for today's run.  It was working before, as I have uploaded other MotionBased gpx files and created routes.  But it doesn't seem to be working now.

There are no membership level restrictions on any functions related to the routes.

Email the gpx file to the BT 'support' email address and I'll take a look.

Same as the rest, no problem uploading, only assigning a route to anything but "Run."

After selecting "Add New Route" the user is given the option to "Upload a GPX File". This works great except that all routes become running routes. Selecting a different icon at the top of the page has no effect, and there is no apparent means for the user to modify this attribute. The "Route Manager" enables some minor adjustments, but not to the type of route (swim, bike, or run).

I got it working. I went in and deleted out all but the one track and all the waypoints (there were several) with easyGPS. Have not tried a bike route.

I uploaded a fix last night, should be working. As to all uploaded routes defaulting to 'Run', I'll look at that this evening, shouldn't be too complicated.

I'd like some input here from you GPS device users: some of these things are plotting points every 3 feet or so. That's a lot of data for this purpose and slows things down more than it's worth. I'm probably going to throttle it by adding some "if this point is less than n meters from the previous one, ignore it" logic when uploading.

My question to you is "how many meters should n be?".

Thanks Mike - got it to upload a run this morning - zero issues. Download a gpx file from motionbased and then uploaded. Have not done anything directly from garmin training center. I will try cycling after you get a look at it. Thanks for all the work on it.

Ok, when uploading a route you'll get prompted to enter swim, bike or run.

I think this would only be an issue if it cut off a corner, like a 90 degree corner.

If it was set to 9 and you ran 4 meters from the last point to a turn, then ran 5 more before the program tagged it, you would read the 6 meter angle instead of the 9 (90 degrees = 4-5-6).

if you ran a lot of city streets, 10 corners would equal a 30 meter loss.

I know with the Forerunner 305, there are two recording options:
record every second
smart recording - records a point when you break from a straight line

I believe the older Forerunners used smart recording with no other options and am not sure what other models use. My guess is that the ones presenting problems are the tracks with every second recording.

Since the smart recording records a point when you turn, I really don't want BT to erase any trackpoints. I'd suggest looking at the time between points and only sabatage those who use every second recording
It didn't take long after the 205/305's were out before Motionbased only offered limited support for the every second recording. Here is a snippet from them. Read the full thread for more details

Turn your device back to Smart Recording. MB will not be accepting activities over 1 hour that track using 1 second resolution. This restriction will be starting as early as this week so please make the adjustments soon. Using 1 second resolution is overkill and goes beyond the accuracy of the location sensing technology, cadence and heart rate interpretation unless you are moving fast.
