Regular 233   In the Country Virginia |  Subject: South or NorthHad a debate about people from the North vs people from South...basically who was a nicer group of people...I say Southern people...we wave at everyone, talk to anyone, for the most part will help anyone with anything....What say you? |

My experience is that people in NY are much more tolerant of "different" people than the people I met while living in NC and more openminded, too. NY people seem much more cultured, educated and much more well traveled (outside US) than the people I met in NC. While I heard plenty of derogatory remarks about Indians and blacks while living in NC, I didn't hear any of this in NY. I would not, however, take this small sample of attitudes and backgrounds and assume that all NYers are like the people I met in NYC; same goes for NC. Like I said, I take people as I find them, one at a time. I'm sure NY is full of bigots and ignorant folk, just as NC is. |

I'd say that northern east cost folk are substantially different than Midwesterners who're different than those west of the Dakotas. Isn't it neat that we have so many different cultures in the USA? | Regular 233 In the Country Virginia | Subject: RE: South or North Its not a fight..not even an argument...just a question about peoples percieved and real world experience...I couldnt care any less what someone thinks of me...or anyone else...yup there are nice and not so nice people everwhere...But if you break it down you can see a general difference in people that can be further broken down by geography...It is done every single day...People meet me and think I am a dumb redneck when they hear me talk or see the way I dress...But they dont know who I really am I dont tell them either...I just laugh when they think they are smarter...I say yup and golly and yall mus be right...I see redneck jokes every day on TV...It is one of the last allowable prejudices in this country...Big deal who cares...I though of all places this would be one that could discuss this rationaly...but alas I was wrong.. I know someone from NC; she considers herself cultured, well travelled (post-grad trip to Europe) and not a redneck. She has certain 'attitudes' towards black people but she thinks this is normal and acceptable because she's not "as racist" as most of her friends and family. Some people are just blind to their own bigotry. It makes me sad that she has this darkness in her. |
