Subject: How Does Swimming Affect the Bike?
I have my first Oly next Saturday and I've only done one swim/bike transition and the swim was not that hard.  I know that pushing too hard on the bike will negatively affect my run, but I'm not so sure about the swim since different muscle groups are involved.  If a swim becomes anaerobic towards the end, is that a big problem for the bike?  I swam harder that I have in the past on Wednesday and took it easy for the last 5 laps.  I was totally out of breath with 5 laps to go but after 5 relatively easy laps I felt good.  I was wondering if this would be similar to a race.

You will most likely be fine on the bike from going too hard on the swim. Giving it may take a bit to feel comfortable on the bike at first. But you run will be a bad one if you hammer the swim and the bike at your target pace. Even if it's different muscles you only have one heart, and it will get worn out.

It's all tied together.  You only have a certain amount of stored energy in your body (glycogen) and if you use a lot in the swim, it will deplete what's available for the bike and run.

From a muscular standpoint, you can push the swim and it will not overly stress the muscles needed for the bike or run so with that you would be okay.

I think I won't try to be too aggressive on the swim.  If I push hard I think I would only gain a minute or so for much more energy lost.

Find some "feet" to draft off of, this will allow you to conserve a little bit and still put up a decent time.

Good luck!!
