Subject: refueling?
ok, so I'm pretty new to all of this.  I've been rowing at the college level for the past 4 years and the only thing I've ever known is no food 2.5/3hr before race/practice and I would typically drink about 32oz of water during a 2 hour practice (50-80min of work).  I read something on here the other day about someone eating around 5 gu packets during a 1hr ride.  This seems really excessive.  I've just been taking 1 bottle of water with me for rides 30miles or less, 2 for longer rides.  How important is it to intake calories on the ride or would I still be fine eating a good meal post ride?

Typically an athlete will have between 1.5-2 hours of stored glycogen so up to 2 hours you are probably fine with just water.  It will take a little experimentation to find what you need but I would say that if you are going over 2 hours, you might want a bottle of water and one of sports drink or a gel or two.

What you read was wrong.  Take a read through this , some good info there regarding nutrition.

Anything up to an hour and a half or even two hours you can last on glycogen already stored in your body.  I only start to consume calories if I do more than 1.5 hours.
