FWIW....I would avoid any gas producing foods race day and had boiled eggs fit that bill to me (course, I don't like them anyway).  Carbs and an easily digested protein.....don't try  anything this weekend you haven't tried for training.  You never know how the stomach will react to it.

Do you have race nutrition planned? It is definitely different than a sprint.  You need to plan for nutrition throughout the day or it could be a long and ugly day of bonking out there.  My first oly is Sunday and I have a race mojo chocolate soy milk with whole wheat bagels and peanutbutter planned for breakfast, optimum bar in T1 as I run out the bike.  Planned intervals to drink Heed/water with gels and an extra optimum bar in the pocket.  A race belt with heed and water for the run with more gels and some salt tabs too.

How did your breakfast work out for your first two sprints? That should be your starting point.

IMO, your sprint breakfast was A LOT of food, but every person is different and has different needs. For Sprints and Olys, I usually eat a bagel or english muffin or Clif Bar before the race. Just one. Sip on some water as well.

During the races: For sprints, you shouldn't need any nutrition except water and maybe gatorade on the run. For Oly's, just a GU on the bike. Just my opinion but like I said, everyone is different.

5 hard boiled eggs? WOW. I usually eat something simple morning of - bagel, cereal, maybe yogurt. And of course, coffee.

I've done one oly, and my nutrition plan during was a gu right before the race and water/gatorade on the bike along with a pack of sports beans. I found these easier to eat and digest than clif sports blocks. I also liked the beans because I could eat them slower as opposed to slurping down another gu. On the run, I just took what was handed out on the race course - mixing sports drink with water. It seemed to work well.

Whatever you do, practice beforehand. Race day is not a good time to start something new.

Why eat so much, if your eating well (ie recovery meals, etc) & have proper nutrition during the event you don't need to eat that much before a race.

Everyone is different however.

Myself, race day "breakfast" is a banana and coffee, that's it.  ~ 12-16 oz water in the hour up to the event with ~ 6-8 oz of that ~ 10-15 min before the start with a gel.  This is how I've been starting every race since 2006 as I prefer to maximize sleep over getting up 3-4 hours early to eat.  I eat well the day(s) before hand.  Eating too much to close to the race start can be detrimental to performance.  Take a read though this guide , I used it to learn about nutrition when training for my HIM.

My Oly nutrition is af follows

  • ~ 10-15 before start a Gel with water
  • Get on the bike and get up to speed and settle in then another gel and water.  Water only on the bike, usually sip down about 20 oz total depending on the weather
  • ~ 1-2 miles at the of the bike another gel and some water
  • Run is mostly water and may hit a some gatorade if I need some pep at the half way.
  • Post race I eat my recovery/breakfast meal.
Best of luck on your Oly!
