I did a quick search and did not see this, though I'm sure it has been mentioned before.

First tri is Sunday with a pool swim. When I signed up 3 months ago I had to put down 100yd swim time.  I didn't know what it was and don't remember what I put down.

My question is where is the best place to swim to stay out of the faster swimmers way?  I will not have to stop but will side stroke some.

I asked RD to put me at back, and last response I received was I would be seeded by what I put down.

Just want to stay out of everyones way and let them have as good of a time as I will.

Thanks again Dwayne

If you get there and find out you're seeded way too fast, and can't get anyone to change you, just try to make sure you're swimming close to the lane lines, so that faster swimmers can get by you, and if you know someone is coming up to you when you're nearing a wall, just move to the side of the wall that lets them get by and then continue.

All you can do now is make the best of whatever placement your 3 month old guess puts you in. Lots of less experienced people are not seeded well so even if your guess is right on, there will still be passing.

One tri I do regularly now has an indoor pool swim where we have to predict a swim time. I was like you the first year and took a guess. My guess was based on the race's results from previous years. However, I did find out that they would accept swim time changes up until just a few weeks before the event and by then I thought I had a better idea. I was still way off.

Your only chance now is to swim on the bottom of the pool!

(kidding of course)

Some good advice already mentioned.  I will also say, that the customary way to signal a pass is a tap on the foot.  So, if you feel a tap on the foot, keep swimming, but move close to the lane ropes.  If the person has not passed you fully by the wall, stop and let them pass, then continue behind them.

I just did a tri this last Sunday and there was a pool swim. Just stick close to the lane line and they will pass you. You can also stop at the wall and let them pass you as well. I have a swimming background but did not train at all for the swim part of the tri. (I regret that now). Anyway, I noticed that the lady behind me was dragging off me so I stopped at the wall and let her go by. Normally I wouldn't mind but I was tired just trying to keep myself on top of the water, I didn't need to pull her along as well. It went really smooth and even if you have to swim breastroke or backstroke, people can still get by easily. Good luck.
