![]() Swim
Comments: I finally saw Cam finish (he looked a little tired) he handed me the timing band and wished me well. The timing band had kind of lost some of its parts so I had to kind of tie it on and hoped it stayed there. It was about a 300m run to the water, I had to stop and make sure my timing band was on properly before I started swimming and it bothered me for most of the swim. Thought it was going to fall off. Felt as though I had a really good swim, took a couple of seconds to aclimatise, but then all was good. Passed a fair few people and thought I swam strongly. It was the 400m run back to transition that killed me. What would you do differently?: I probably could have swum harder but I was kind of saving myself for all the running. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: No transition times given. Andy cheered me on during the run to transition. I was so tempted to jump the fence to get to my bike, we ran in at row 1 had to run the length of transition to row 39 and then back to 20 where my bike was. It was then a fair run with the bike to start riding. What would you do differently?: Try straight baby oil on the legs, might help get the suit off a bit easier, it didn't give me too much trouble though. ![]() Bike
Comments: Ok, so my bike 'puter said it did the ride in about 22 min with an average of about 28km/hr. I think all transition times were included in the bike time. The wind had definitely picked up by the time I was on the course and there weren't too many girls running the third leg so I was passed by many a bloke & played cat and mouse with one. Whom I eventually managed to pass and hold off. Never fear though, he well and truely caught me on the run. What would you do differently?: Drink more. I really didn't take in enough fluids. ![]() Transition 2
![]() Run
Comments: Phew, it was hot out there once I got started. Again I had an improved run so I'm pretty happy with that. Still a pretty slow time. There were heaps of people out on the run so it was fun. I wasn't exactly sure where the turning point was, in hindsight I could have stepped it up a little bit before the 2 km mark. Saw Rich at my 3km mark and picked it up because it was just as likely that he could have caught me. Had a big cheer from the Melb water team coming into finish. Didn't have it in me to finish really strong and felt relieved to be done. What would you do differently?: Train, train, train. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Saw Kris at the finish but didn't talk long cos I needed drinks. Grabbed gatorade and headed back to the marquee to refuel on fruit and snickers marathon bars (thanks to Rich) and hear about everyone else's experiences. What limited your ability to perform faster: Mentally its a tough race going third. Worst conditions with the wind & sun. Will be more prepared for this if I get to compete next year. The fact that there was so much running to be done in transitions also didn't help things. Lots more run training for me!! Event comments: This really is an amazing race to be a part of. There were approx 4500 people competing (double the biggest tri I've competed in), some for the first time. The volunteers and race organisers did a fantastic job. Everyone was buzzed to be a part of it. Stoked I got a guernsey!! Last updated: 2005-03-20 12:00 AM

Rich, Christine & Andre picked me up at about 5.45am so we could park almost around the coroner from my house. With all the competitors, finding a park was a big win in itself.
Carried all our gear over to the Melbourne water marquee. Woo hoo a marquee!!
Basically each team is made up of 3 competitors, and I had been nominated to go last. Not ideal, but hey if it meant I was getting a run then so be it. I think our team's wave start went off at about 7.45, so by the time I was off it was 9.30. I hate the waiting, it's frustrating knowing everyone's out there having their fun. I was itching to get out. So I oiled up my legs w baby oil gel (note to self: try using baby oil next time) and put on my wetsuit and roasted in the sun. I wasn't too sure when Cam was going to get in to the team transition area, so I gave up the notion of getting in the water before my swim and waited and waited. Developing a need to go to the bathroom which I tried to ignore.
