Subject: New Route tracker feature
(If this has been mentioned before I'm sorry as I haven't searched the forum about it.)

Please!
There's a thread over on the Tri talk forum about the MapMyRun website.  It was mentioned that it has a feature to automatically follow roads.  I checked it out, sweet, this would be a very useful feature for the BT rout tracker.

Also, regarding editing a route, could it be possible to edit routes say from a midpoint in the route to add a new loop without having to manually undo 50 points back to get to the point to modify it?  A lot of times I run home from work and only have a couple a ways to go.  But if I need to add distance along the way I may check out a neighborhood or two then get back on track.  Lately I've been just tracking out the distance I added then subtracting the portion not done  manually to estimate route distance for the log without saving the route.  I lose the route history doing this but don't have to deal with a lot of modifiying work.

Having the 'follow road' feature would be so helpful with editing routes too!

Since I'm at it!  When mapping a route, could the last point (segment) information also be put on the side underneath the Overall stats?  Distance, climb and grade% from the last point would be great to have instead of having to move the cursor over the hard to pinpoint pixel.

And on the elevation charts, I think it would be useful to have a point highlighted on the elevation chart with the cursor provide some more data beside just the climb number as there is no relationship provided to the route map.   It would be great if the route point and the elevation point had a relationship where both would be highlighted at the same time when one is selected with the corresponding info.  Reference something like the Musselman bike route online, that's a nice route map.

Any way thanks for your time and keep up the great BT work...

The Route Tracker has been scheduled to be overhauled later this summer. Follow Roads is definitely going to be a part of it.

The schedule may change a bit though, as a completely new version of the Google Maps API (which the Route Tracker is built on) was recently released in Beta. I've looked through the documentation and code released so far and based on what the Google programmers say and what I've seen, it promises to be much faster and more robust than the current version. Given this,  I believe it will be worth waiting for it to be into general release.

This is going to be a major rewrite of this application and we have a whole slew of new features that are going to be included. The elevation chart/map tie-in thing that Jeff Henderson did at One Million Revolutions is just one.*

* Yes, Jeff, I'm stealing your idea. You can penalize me 2 minutes at the Musselman this year.

Saw this thread and another from summer 2008 about adding the 'follow roads' feature to the route tracker. Is that still in the works? Thanks. I appreciate all you guys do to make this a great site.

Yeah, it's going to happen. I'm toying with the idea of starting a poll to see what features people want in this.

Definately "Follow Roads"  with the ability to toggle it off/on in the middle of a route!  Smile
