I'm considering doing this in November. The running and biking are no problem, but I am concerned about the obstacles. What type of stuff do you have to do? I have endurance, but not strength and am scared as to what the obstacles entail. Can you please let me know?

Thanks!

I did Muddy Buddy in San Jose last year and it was a blast. The obstacles are really pretty easy. A couple of them look intimidating -- I remember freaking out when I saw the "wall" you have to climb -- but they're not bad. I think the only obstacle people struggled with was the balance beam, just because they were a little shaky by that point, but everyone I know finished it just fine. Honestly, the hardest part of the race for me was the biking, just because I'd never ridden a mountain bike on a trail before.

If you want a list of all the obstacles, you can check out my race report. I seem to recall reading somewhere that one of the obstacles had changed this year, but I can't imagine it's any tougher.

You should do it!

Thanks for the race report. That actually confirms that I may not be ready for it. Because of my weight and lack of upper body strength, anything climbing freaks me out. I'd hate to get out there and not be able to do it. Sounds like a fun race, though.

if you can climb a ladder, you can do it.  yes, there is a 6' climbing wall, but the holds are generous and easily placed for reaching.  the inflatable slide is more of a pain IMO, climbing a rope grid against the vinyl slide surface.  But really, I didn't find upper body needed that much - I was more sore in my arms from holding onto the bike for dear (excited, happy) life.

I've done it two years in San Jose now, what a kick.  find a partner and have a blast.   (I met 'Fielding' at Muddy Buddy 2008.)

I totally agree. I have *horrible* upper body strength and it really didn't matter with the obstacles. You should really consider it! It's a very fun, very non-competitive "race". (Frankly, if you got out there and realized you couldn't do an obstacle, I'm positive the volunteers would just wave you on. The only way to DNF this race would be if you couldn't finish the bike/run portions.)
