Overcast
Total Time = 1h 34m 31s
Overall Rank = 36/131
Age Group = M25-29
Age Group Rank = 5/6
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5AM. Showered. bagel for breakfast. Power bar about 1hr prior.
Event warmup:

About 1mi of light jogging and some stretching.
Run
  • 20m 28s
  • 3 miles
  • 06m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

Fastest pace I have ever ran for this distance since HS. Felt good. Took me a little while to get warm since I am use to 80 and 90s and the started race temp. was less than 60. Paced myself most of the race with a guy wearing SBR Multisport gear, which was where I bought my bike. Wanted to talk to the guy post-race to find out where he was from, but never got around to it.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster if I could...seriously, I was happy with the run. I was expecting sub 7 and that's what I did.
Transition 1
  • 00m 44s
Comments:

No major issues. Had some Hammer Gel and water.
Bike
  • 49m 48s
  • 16 miles
  • 19.28 mile/hr
Comments:

Prob averaged around 22-23 on the flats, but there were prob 6 or so climbs where I was only averaging high single digits to low double digits. Got passed a lot on uphills and then passed back on downhills and flats. Not sure why...maybe I had more top gears for the downhills or I need more practicing climbing. Paced w/ the same SBR Multisport guy. Calves started to cramp about 1/2 way through. Had one bottle of gatorade.
What would you do differently?:

Need to practice hills. Practice some run/bike bricks...maybe that was part of the cramping issue...but who really knows.
Transition 2
  • 00m 38s
Comments:

Almost lost the bike on the dismount...had right leg over to left side. Came in a tad fast and when I dismounted my back wheel came flying up since I was on the breaks hard. Still using cages and not biking shoes so transitions were quick. Had some more Hammer Gel and water.
Run
  • 22m 56s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

Woohoo, finally finished 4th in my AG for a segment. Calves were cramping so bad the first 0.25mi that I had to stop on Mkt St bridge for about 5-7s to stretch them out. Luckily the course wasn't too hilly so they were really a non-issues after I got 1mi out although they were still a tab sore.
Post race
Warm down:

Nothing much. Got my calves massaged and then did about 0.25mi of light jogging.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Legs cramping on bike and early on 2nd run. Maybe needed more water prior to the race but I drank 32oz prior to the race and I went to the bathroom twice in the 1hr beforehand. Need to improve my bike time...I guess bike shoes and some more training.

Event comments:

They didn't post the race results afterwards. They had water, gatorade, oranges and bananas afterwards, but nothing else. Only other time I ever saw that many ppl on Public Square is during the Farmer's Market:)

Random thoughts...
Weather was ideal for weds19 (60 & overcast).
B&K, the girls we met at Devilman that were from the Valley raced. One girl finished 2 spots behind me...3rd overall female.
Top finisher...1:15:17 (5:49/mi, 24.9mph, 6:08/mi)... crazy fast and of course in my AG (as were 3 of the top 5)
Nice to sleep at home and only drive 5min to get to the race!!!
I went to bed at 4:30am on Friday night (actually Sat. morning) and then got up at 5am on Sunday morning...can't say i remember those times every being so close in my life on consecutive days.
Lin-Mark had online results less than 12hrs after the race.
Finished 34/103 for males.
I finished 36th overall, yet my best segment rank was 41st. Guess I was consistent and had better than avg T times.

One of her friends kept telling me that Honolulu was on The Big Island...so I had to bust out the computer and show her a map b/c she didn't believe me when I said it was on Oahu. oh young girls...still so much for them to learn
