Just a couple of ideas for Ron, Matt and the techology crew to kick around. Feel free to add ideas of your own:

  1. Route saving/selection: most of my runs/rides are over the same few routes, depending on how far/long I want to go. It would be nice to be able input these routes (say, "6-mile St. Espirit Loop" and just be able to pull down the route each day you run it, maybe could also allow you to compare efforts on that route, like maybe PR, average, etc.
  2. "State" selection in profile: maybe as a drop-down box in the Control Panel area where the user establishes his profile. Yeah, I know we have "Location" but this is input in a wide range of formats. If someone was to search for "Louisiana" in the User Listings, for example, they wouldn't find me because I input my location as "Cajun Country." Also might help you guys in marketing this site to prospective sponsors to be able to give them a geographical dispersion. Also could have "Provinces" or whatever those Canuck fellows call their political subdivisions.
  3. FAQ-somewhere, somehow, either as an article or a seperate forum, some place where the new posters can go and read some of the most prevalent questions that continuously recur on the boards.

As always, thanks to you guys for making this the great website that it is!

I was thinking about this also.. (sorry now I have another request..)

You might even be able to add an input box for a link to eachroute on the gmaps pedometer or map24.com (if it has a permalink feature). The user would obviously have to create these links...

Thanks for your hard work..

1 - for the 'routes'...i always wondered how important they were to loggers...so essentially, like the equipment list in the log screen, a 'route' list you would just pick one and it would input the miles?  and then a table can compare/sort by date each logged 'route' versus time/pace/overall workout etc...?

2 - yes, the state.  when we redo the directory in a few months, we are also going to make this a mandatory selction in the control panel for a 'my bt' page that will display all part of the sites activity corresponding to that users configured state: clubs, retailers, races, group forum posts, etc...AND this will automatically work better with the user state search too...

3 - FAQ...i'm not sure...i've always kicked this around in my head...and observe other forums hoping to get an answer...i think questions are good - even repeaters...different/newer people jump in and answer them...differnet perspectives...i dunno...there will always be people (not necessarily the same ones) to answer questions...at least thats my vision of the forum...as long as i can provide the useful features to keep people coming here, there will be people to answer questions.  i would rather not have a faq...i like the constant interaction better...

for the gmaps pedometer and stuff...i have already asked programmer dude about this...will prolly look into more of this kind of stuff in early 2006 as that technology evolves....

I whole heartily agree.  A FAQ would, IMO, make the site a bit less beginner friendly and maybe slow growth?  By having repeat/ basic questions posted it allows those who are tentative/shy an opportunity to post and get involved on the BT boards.

My .02 cents!

This one has crossed my mind too. I seem to recall reading somewhere that most runners and cyclists have an average of 5/6 routes that they use repeatedly. I have a "time trial" route for my bike and it would be cool to have automatically updating PRs for it. It'd be interesting to correlate route times with phases of training too.

The gmaps pedometer is only one example of what can be done. Google has published a full API for creating your own applications with Google maps but it wouldn't necessary to go with that right away. To begin with, the route wouldn't have to include a map, just a link to a previously saved one in Google, or mapquest or whatever. It could then be upgraded, if desired, to include custom Google map functionality.
