Pre-race routine:

nerves - asking lots of questions.....

Event warmup:

short warm up jog around the leisure centre
Swim
  • 09m 37s
  • 400 meters
  • 02m 24s / 100 meters
Comments:

Great swim - passed loads of people and well beat my 12min estimated time. Water was warm but I suffered a little from the amount of chop from all the swimmers. I ended up suffering bloating so must have swallowed too much air at some point.
What would you do differently?:

Improve breathing and relax more. Take fewer pauses at the lane changes etc.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Forgot towel in the rush so decided not to use socks. Shoes went on easily but I decided to put on a extra layer due to cold wind and the problems I had last time when I froze on the bike. Number belt went on OK.
Long run (75m) to the road along a narrow gravel path.
What would you do differently?:

Remember to pack my towel - dry feet a little.
Bike
  • 1h 00m 22s
  • 23.3 kms
  • 23.16 km/hr
Comments:

Really tough cycle - the map didn't look too bad as the contours were gradual but it was actually ALL hills. First 6km was all uphill and tough. The roads were quiet but very exposed and windy. It didn't matter how many turns you made it was always somehow blowing in your face. Passed a few slow riders but got passed by a few fast guys as well. Really pushed hard and made better time - couldn't have given mouch more.
What would you do differently?:

Train more - need more general bike fitness! Focus on steering a straigheter course.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Right show wouldn't go on with elastic laces - kept pushing up the insole and had to do it 3 times to get it on properly.
What would you do differently?:

talk my shoes - dry my feet off (no towel though...)
Run
  • 30m 33s
  • 5 kms
  • 06m 07s  min/km
Comments:

Very tough run - felt really bloated with air that was very painful. Developed a chest pain half way round lap 1 that combined with stomach meant large amounts of pain the whole way. Much slower that it should have been - little loss of conditioning from recent lack of training and hard effort on swim and bike. Managed a hard sprint to the end (dont know where the energy came from) and passed the fast guy who had passed me 5 mins earlier!!!!
What would you do differently?:

nothing I could do
Post race
Warm down:

collapse, drink, eat

What limited your ability to perform faster:

lack of training last 3 weeks - last minute prep

Event comments:

Tough course - everyone moaned about the bike leg and the hills so nobody set a PB's!
Better organised than previous race.
Massive personal achievement to complete it when I nearly didn't even turn up!!!

After almost quitting the game, you did a fantastic job in your race. I admire you for not quitting and welcome you back to the BT team.

Thanks - funny thing is now I can't understand how I even thought about not going??? We seem to be in the middle of our monsoon season at the moment (lol) but even so, I'm still contemplating how to get my bike session in tonight between showers, or maybe worst case a run etc. How did I manage to totally drop out of this for 3 weeks during the best training weather we'll get all year?

Well, you cant change the past, only the future, so that'll be what I focus on now.
