Pre-race routine:

The day before I went to the expo with my husband, two kids and two dogs. It was fun to walk around and see everything. I finally met KathyG and three of her kids. There was a lot of excitement in the air and quite a party atmosphere. I had one of my colleagues from work who was doing the race for the first time. There had been much talk around the office as to who would win...and in my heart I really WANTED to beat him...but he was 10 years younger and a much better runner (Boston marathon)...anyway we had a quiet and early night as I expected to be up early on Saturday. Breakfast before the race was oatmeal and water. I am still trying to figure out the proper hydration level to try and stave off the nausea I always get on the bike.
Event warmup:

It was a dark and stormy morning...again! I got to the race early enough to set up transition and walk the ins and outs...metup with KathyG and saw my colleague from work. My husband and the kids got there avout half an hour before the race started. I got in the water and swam a little to work out the butterflies.
Swim
  • 09m 56s
  • 586 yards
  • 01m 42s / 100 yards
Comments:

There were so many people in a wave. It was really hard to find a good place and get into any kind of rhythm. I kept getting smacked on the head by the woman next to me. I was trying to be careful not to kick anyone. It was really too many people. The course was short enough that it made it hard for people to spread out.
What would you do differently?:

This is my best event. I think I still need to find a good postion to start and just go for it!
Transition 1
  • 03m 4s
Comments:

I did OK in this transition. I wanted to get through it as quickly as possible. I had good success clipping into my pedals which gave me a boost of confidence.
What would you do differently?:

I still need to practice getting on the bike FASTER
Bike
  • 59m 35s
  • 15.4 miles
  • 15.51 mile/hr
Comments:

I really wanted to put in a good effort on this course. I concentrated on pushing down as well as pulling up. I also tried to maximize my effort in the downhill and really pushed hard through these stretches. Maximum speed of 35 mph made me happy just before the turn around. I pedaled hard on the way back but just missed my goal time by one minute.
What would you do differently?:

I need to keep riding...lots more than I have been. I need to really work on my leg strength. More hills and more confidence with speed.
Transition 2
  • 02m 3s
Comments:

I got off the bike OK but would really like to be able to take my feet out and ride with my feet on top of the shoes. Had a smooth transition from the bike shoes to the running shoes.
What would you do differently?:

Practice taking feet out of shoes and riding with feet on top of shoes.
Run
  • 27m 50s
  • 3 miles
  • 09m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

This is the part that I have done the longest and it gave me the most trouble today. I have been trying to drink enough during the bike to get rid of the nausea that I experience on the bike. Unfortunately by the time I go to run I am nothing more than a sloshing barrel of water. I had a hard time getting going and it took about 1 mile for me to work through feeling bad. Finally I found my pace and I finished feeling pretty good. But the first mile killed me...and that's where I lost the race to my colleague (he beat me by one minute exactly)
What would you do differently?:

I really need to figure out the issues with drinking too much/to little to find a way to get through the race comfortably without the nausea on the bike. I would love to be able to run like I do every evening after work...effortlessly!
Post race
Warm down:

I hung around to see KathyG in ( I hope she heard me cheering her through the chute)...it was starting to rain pretty hard and the kids were getting restless so I packed up pretty quickly and headed to a dry house and a warm shower.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I really have to figure out the nausea on the bike thing. Having a gel before the bike ride helps a little...but I still feel ill about half way through. I will figure it out!

Event comments:

This is always an amazingly well produced race. I enjoy the atmosphere and the positive attitude of the volunteers and participants. This is a great race! Luckily the rain held off until late in the race...but put a damper on the post-race activities. I can't wait to do this race on a sunny day!

Course: This is a rolling hilly course. There had been much conversation during the pre-race time about how hard this course was. This kind of freaked me out and I started to second guess my ability to do well here ( I had done this in 58 minutes last year). There was a cheerleading squad at the turn around doing some pretty amazing stunts. I was impressed.

Great job!! You are a fast runner even with a sloshing-full stomach. Too bad the weather didn't cooperate more today. I hope I get to do this one with you next summer!!

Great race Laura. Wish I could have gotten up there to cheer you all on, but 2 trips in 2 days would have been a bit much. Keith Jordan sure puts on a good race and you get good stuff in the goody bags too!

Laura...great race...and super improvement over last year.

It was great to finally meet and talk even though it was always to short. You did awesome on your swim and run! Bike is tough...those hills are tough. We need to get some good hill work in before Mooseman and/or Timberman next year...and we will smoke everyone up those nasty NH hills.

I think you beat your colleague...I bet you placed higher in your AG than he did...but guys don't see it that way.

I did hear someone yelling Kathy but didn't see how was yelling...thought it was you or Katherine (lobstergirl) or my TI swim coach. I enjoyed the encouragement...it made the long chute seem shorter and way more fun. Thanks!

Nice work! Maybe a nice balance of weather between Saturday's rain and yesterday's hot sun would have been nice .  Congrats on your hard work and improvements!
