Well I'll start by telling you all my name is John. I'm 42 and in "average" health albeit a little overweight. I think the most difficult thing to do when deciding to take the first step in anything is setting attainable goals. So I did this yesterday. My immediate short-term goal is to run in my first 5k on 10/23/11. Now I am NOT a strong runner at all and I think this will be my most difficult event in a tri so I am going to focus on that first. I have been running a bit off and on since the spring so I modified the "Couch to 5k" a bit to start me where I am physically while also getting me up to the 5k level. My longer term goal is to participate in a tri next summer. I don't really know if starting from scratch at my age makes this an impossible goal in this time frame but I'm going to give it a shot. My next step is to announce this to my family and friends. This will hold me accountable and keep me going too. I'm only holding off on this until after I see my doctor on Thursday to make sure I'm cleared medically to start training. Either way, I will be doing the 5k! I'm nervous about all this but I think I've got a good basic start point and I will build from that. I'm buying a new pair of running shoes today on my way to work. Cheers!John

Hi John, welcome to BT and endurance sports! Good luck with the 5k and it is supersmart to clear with your doc first--how come everybody says to do that and nobody actually does

Do you know how to swim and how to ride a bicycle? If not, yes, that's starting from scratch, but a tri next summer would still be very doable.

Thanks for the welcome. I do know how to swim but that will take some time to build up as I haven't swam in a long time. I am a strong cyclist though and I'm certain that will always be my strongest event. The doctor visit is kinda coincidental because the wife made it for me a few weeks ago but hey, the timing works. Cheers!John

Hi John!

Great way to start!  I recommend you go to a shoe store where they have specialists who know how to measure your foot dynamics like your gait, arch, and size.  I did my own research long before I started training for my first tri and purchased a pair on my own.  However, the running store I went to 3 months ago had a really knowledgeable rep there who told me I got pretty close.  We tried about 5 different pairs of running shoes until we got the right fit, stability, arch support, and comfort.  She also told me once my distances go beyond 10K, I'm gonna have to purchase another pair and I'm not hesitant to go back to her once I do.  Good luck!

~Roland
