I snagged this from the Xmas wishlist thread so that wouldn't get bogged down with off topic comments:

P.S. Steve - I have some experience with your situation and would love to help you get your wish - so when you decide to stop enabling your freeloader, let me know and I will share my freeloader ejecting techniques.

it's kind of complicated. dude was in a car accident and had his ankle shattered so he couldnt work and from what i understood, was just going to stay when he needed to. he is also one of my roommates best friends and they are in a band together. but he's recovered now but STILL sleeps on our couch, doesn't shut up, only works nights at a bar (but not every night), sleeps til god knows when, turns on the downstairs a/c when it's not needed like last night, the tv is always on and sometimes its blasting when i get up for work at 5:45am, has given a whole $140 for rent and $100 for bills and is annoying to the point that for the longest time now when I get home at 9:30pm, if I see his car i get kinda depressed. By that time all I want to do is eat, maybe watch tv for like an hour then go to bed, not listen to his crap that I don't care about and be reminded of the fact that he's still in our house.

Having done this myself, infact most Aussies have while living abroad its kinda our national sport, i always knew when it was time to leave. mainly because another Aussie was due to arrive for their alloted time on the couch.

My sugeestion is have a discussion with your roommate. You probably already have, i know, but this time add a little more venom. request an increase in rent and bills from him. Not unreasonable as you can see that he has stayed or is intending to stay longer than you imagined. Who is on the lease? if you are the sole leasor, you have the control. You could always request they both leave. there is always others out there looking for shared accommodation.

This is exactly the reason i moved in with my now fiance. Too tired of people treating my home like a drop box for the red cross. All the unwanted stuff end up with you. Get tough. hey that needs to be on a lance style wrist band.

If only our Aussie house guest on walkabout had this skill. A two week stay turned into two months. Guitars got left out in the rain, cars got driven on the wrong side of major roads. After he'd moved on, we'd start getting pictures from London, Paris Lichtenstein etc. which I'd look at and say "Hey that's my shirt!!!". Relative of my wife. Couldn't do much. He was young though, grew up into a really nice guy.

A friend of a roommate? No mercy. Give a drop dead date and enforce it.
