Pre-race routine:

Slow morning. Ate 2 slices toast with PB and 1 banana, drank lots of water. Passed the time wandering about downtown Mystic with a friend. 1:30 is such an odd start time!
Event warmup:

Stretching, then about 3 minutes of light warmup jogging.

Comments:

This run felt hard-ish, not surprisingly because my workout schedule has been so erratic lately. My conditioning could have been better. However, I was pretty happy with the overall pace. My first mile was a bit too slow (somewhere around 8:43) but it actually improved a bit with each mile afterward. The chip timing worked all right at the end, but I don't think they used the chip to determine start time. The gun went off and it took several seconds to get the crowd moving -- and then, we didn't even have to step over the mat. I suspect that they were timing from the gun, not from the individual chip.

Warm down:

Light walking/stretching.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Ran with a friend the first 3 miles. We talked the whole time (duh). Finally she said "You go ahead!" and I moved up a bit. Probably wasted a lot of energy chatting, but it did help pass the time.

Event comments:

Post-race, there's a little picnic of chowder, rolls, and apple cider. It was nice.

Performance:
Course: Relatively flat, gently winding run up the western side of the Mystic River, to the head of the river and back downtown. This used to be part of my weekly long run when I lived in Mystic, so it was familiar territory. One portion of the race, at the turnaround, utliizes an old right-of-way trail through the woods. Great foliage, plus it broke up the boredom of out-and-back running a little bit.

Great job Michelle.  Good pace for doing under 50 min for a 5.5 miler. You'll smoke me at Danskin next time.

I just caught this report.  LOL, you talked with a friend for three miles!  You're like me: seriously lacking in a cut-throat mentality.  I'm glad to see you had fun, even with the difficulties posed by the distance.
