Subject: Logging your swim workouts

So I have a general question about the time you all log for your swim workouts.  Yes this is probably just a technicality but I am too detailed of a person to not determine the right away or at least the consensus before I get in a habit.  So the question is what do you calculate as the time you swam in a workout when you log it in the training log?  Do you count the warm up and cool down time and distance?  If your training plan calls for a 30 min workout are you timing the workout from when you enter the pool to when you get out?  If so that would mean you would count the 15-30 sec breaks for ex between sets if you do sets.

All in all I am just trying to determine a consistent way to track my time in the pool and if I count the entire time and distance (warm up, cool down, breaks, and swim workout) I am not sure if I am cheating myself on my plan and my 100yd average is skewed higher in a sense for the workout.  If I count only the time I swim then I am in the pool longer to achieve the time needed for the plan (not a bad thing just a different perspective), but my 100 yd time is accurate to what I can actually did in the core of the workout.  Like I said over thinking this but just the way it is sometimes.  What do you do?

Personally, I log my SWIM time: warm up, cool down, drills, laps, etc, but not my rest intervals. Even this is not completely accurate, because some days are more drill-heavy than others and bring down the pace average, etc. So, I don't worry much about the total average for a complete swim session, and look instead at the times for specific sets.

In the end, it doesn't matter what anyone else does, only that you be consistent

Thanks for the quick reply HillSlugger.  Where do you record the times for the sets, because I am doing what you are currently, but don't track the set times anywhere.  I don't see a place to record it here on the site training log so are you tracking them elsewhere, like excel or something?

I just log them in the body of the text field; take a look at my logs (past weeks are more typical that this current week).

This seems so silly to say but it is what I thought when I first saw your log.  That is awesome.  Thank you for helping out and sharing.
