Subject: Wish me luck--My team plays "that guy"
After a 6 year hiatus from coaching football, I am back coaching my son's 4th grade team in our community in-house league. Our league has a philosophy of development over winning at all costs. The league has rules about playing all kids as equally as possible, playing defense ( head-up positioning, no blitzing before the snap), and running the the offesnive playbook.

This week we play the team coached by "that guy." He is also on the board and is the grade level director. During last season and this season his team has ened up with either better players, or noticeable fewer players as he is in charge of player distribution. During games he argues with refs, runs illegal defenses, and runs offensive plays outside of the agreed upon playbook (based on the high school playbook). His offense is all about running his own kid on almost every play. He plays his best players the whole game and only subs out his lesser players. He accused another coach of cheating when his own kid threw an interception. When others have tried to discuss the issues with him, they are either wrong (he did run a legal play), pleads ignorance (he didn't know, but does the same thing the next game), or just ignores them (doesn't respond, tells them to talk to someone else).

I am a competitive person, but also believe I have a responsibility to follow the league rules. I think it is going to be a hard game for me (my players will probably be fine). Pray for me or wish us luck. Any advice would be appreciated as well.

I don't have a similar experience coaching, but I played baseball in a mens league that was supposed to be fun but the team I was on, the coach did not have that spirit. There were similar rules about everyone getting equal playing time (non of us were going to be making a MLB roster), hell we all paid to play in the league, and the coach would always work the rules so he and his friends substantially played more than me and a few other guys. Eventually one game came and he put the lineups up and I said something, he kind of threw a little hissy fit, but everyone else supported my stance. The guy was one of the founding members of the league, and word got around and the other 3 guys that founded the league with him demoted him from being coach any longer. The only thing you can do is say something and hope others stand with you. If it's obvious to you, it will be to others as well, and hopefully as a group you can get things to change. I have a 2 year old and would love to coach sports someday, so I'm sure I'll be in that same spot sometime. Good luck!

Have someone video the entire game, from pre-game to getting in the car at the parking lot and leaving afterwards (especially if your team wins).  Then, if he lives up to his reputation, you can fall back on the video.  My youngest son has played team sports year-round for probably 6+ years now, and I have seen a few coaches and parents similar to what you describe.  They are very good at taking any fun out of youth sports, and their behavior can push people to the brink of fighting.

If he has been called on it before and nothing has been done.  Video it as has been said before.  Not by your or by your family, but by one of the parents on your team.  I used to run the YMCA leagues for football, soccer, basketball and baseball/softball and could not be at every game.  I had to remove coaches from the league, because they did not follow the rules that all of the coaches agreed to at the beginning of the year.  Luckily I am no longer in that job, as some very talented coaches sit on the sidelines and complain about the people actually spending a lot of time volunteering trying to make it better for all the kids.  I also did my full share of coaching softball and basketball for my daughters.

Do the best you can for the kids you are coaching and get support from the parents of the children you are coaching.  Good luck and have fun with it, so the kids can have fun with it also.

I didn’t used to like to run slow. You begin to recalibrate your needs and wants and if-only you could jog an easy two miles, three times per week. Running is a gift.
