A racer was hit and killed by a car today in the Sawyer Park Tri in Louisville today. It certainly changes the mood and thoughts of a race when you pass Fire & Rescue and police vehicles with lights blazing, a mangled bike, and feet sticking out from a white blanket. It happened on a straight, open, flat stretch of 4 lane road with monitors at all intersections and almost no traffice. I finished the race, but I am a little freaked out.

How awful.  I can certainly understand why you would have been psyched out about what you saw.  I can't even imagine what I would have done if I had seen that.

It slowed me down quite a bit.  Kind of put it all in perspective.  This was my first Triathlon and I was able to finish the race but they shut it down almost right after I crossed the finish.  Prayers to the family of the fallen athlete.

They were making an arrest as I passed.  It is on a stretch of road that cars will top 60MPH at times so it's a little frightening when there is not a race.  I am suprised with all of the bikers on this road someone could still manage to find a way to hit one.

Yeesh. Awful stuff. Prayers/thoughts to the rider's family, and don't forget to hug the family and tell them you love them before heading out on your ride, because you never know.

Horrible. And to be drunk, and flee the scene in that manner ... a senseless and totally avoidable death. My heart goes out to the family, friends, and everyone involved in the race.

Thanks for the link. Drunk before 9 a.m. Unbelievable. Louisville has a HORRIBLE record for letting drivers off the hook for killing cyclists. Maybe this one will be different, due to all the circumstances. I definitely will be praying for the racer's family too.

I was one of last swimmers to start, and the race was called just as I got to my bike without much info, just rumors.  My 1st tri, so was disappointed that I didn't get to finish.  Now that I know the details, I'm a little freaked out.

I finshed the race, but as soon as I did, they told everyone to leave.  I saw the scene, but didn't even look for a body.  I didn't want to.

How incredibly sad!  How scary!  This could've been any one of us who have done tri's on open courses.  wow.  I'm blown away.

My thoughts and prayers will be for this athlete's family today.  wow.

probably not drunk before 9 am, most likely still drunk from last night (probably no sleep either). Hope they lock him up for a long time.

Condolences to the family of the triathlete that was killed.

Probably good that driver is being charged with assaulting the officer, because he is more likely to serve time for that than for driving drunk, killing the cyclist and fleeing the scene.  Murder with a car is not treated like other murder.

Most likely, but they probably passed out at 2-4am and then got up at 8-9am to go home.  I did that a ton when I was younger thinking you are sober when you are no where close to sober.

What's most disturbing is didn't someone say earlier it was a 4lane road that was also straight?  Most my tris have been on two lane roads that often curve.  Might need to get a mirror for the bike (Is that against USAT rules?).

That sucks and is very sad, but hopefully it won't scare anyone away from triathlons.

Thanks Travljini for posting the link to the news story. This is a very sad story and my heart and thoughts go out to the victim's family. I always wonder how many cases like this need to happen before judges and lawmakers start making this kind of heinous behavior more accountable. Safe riding to all of you, and keep your heads on a swivel...
